Degree Completion Classes in Management and Consulting Begin September 7th
Apply online at www.pmc.edu/CIPD or contact ctweedly@pmc.edu

CHESTNUT HILL, MA (June 18, 2013) - - Pine Manor College has established the Center for Innovative Professional Development, which will be welcoming its first cohort of adult students in the fall 2013. Initial offerings include a degree completion program in Management and Consulting targeted for working professionals with at least two years of college credits or an associate’s degree. The program will also be offering certificates in Global Human Resource Management and Action Learning.

“Our goal from the beginning was to create a program that would address the time and cost of completing your bachelor’s degree,” said Dr. Charles A. Tweedly, Dean of the Center and Pine Manor faculty member. “Our first program, the Management and Consulting Bachelor’s degree, does just that. Students can complete the degree in less time, at a significantly lower cost than comparable programs. The Center was established to create innovative leadership programs previously not available at the undergraduate level.”

The Center is unique because of its project-based approach to learning which emphasizes the development of real world skills that students can put to use right away.

“The programs have been designed as affordable and flexible options for people who wish to move ahead in their careers and increase their value to their employer,” Dr. Tweedly added.

The Center represents a strategic alliance between the College and Higher Education Partners, a leading provider of financing assistance and innovative solutions to colleges seeking to expand online curricula and physical facilities. With the development of cutting-edge technology, programs and courses can be provided in a hybrid or blended fashion.

“Higher Education Partners is pleased to be partnering with Pine Manor College to bring expanded programming and enhanced facilities to the Boston area,” said HEP president Gerard Kavanaugh. “By building out the space and technology, HEP is investing in people’s lives and providing them with a viable opportunity for personal and professional growth. The Center will enable the College to reach adult learners more effectively.”

HEP is renovating a classroom building and upgrading it with state-of-the-art technology to accommodate today’s learners. The space will be flexible and conducive to the Action Learning model that replaces traditional instruction with actual actions and practice.

The classes will be held twice a week on the Pine Manor campus in Chestnut Hill. Cutting-edge technology will be used to enhance learning in and out of class. There will be no summer session.

For the past three years, Dr. Tweedly was an Assistant Professor in the Management and Organizational Change Department at Pine Manor College and a part-time faculty member at Northeastern University in the Education Doctoral program. In addition to his work in higher education, Dr. Tweedly has been an independent consultant in the area of training, organizational development and change facilitation.

The Center for Innovative Professional Development at Pine Manor College is focused on meeting the needs of working adults and organizations. New fall offerings include: Bachelor’s Degree Completion programs, Certificate Programs and Leadership Development Programs. The Center for Innovative Professional Development is also the home of the New England Chapter of the World Institute for Action Learning. To learn more, visit www.pmc.edu/CIPD

Dear Members of the Pine Manor College Community,

As the College looks to celebrate another successful academic year, we have identified two honorary degree recipients. Each has made her mark on the profession she has chosen. We are honored to have these women as part of our 2013 commencement ceremony.

Dr. Susan Windham-Bannister was appointed by the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Life Sciences to be the Center's first President and CEO. The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is a quasi-public entity created by the Legislature to promote the life sciences within Massachusetts. The Center is at the heart of the state's new $1 billion life sciences initiative and is fast becoming the hub of connectivity for all sectors of the life sciences community, encouraging unprecedented public-private collaboration among industry, research, academia and government. Dr. Windham-Bannister has 35 years of consulting experience. She sits on a variety of boards of directors and is a frequent speaker and panelist at conferences on competitive strategy.

Bishnu Maya Pariyar was offered sponsorship to attend college in the United States by Eva Kasel!, an American who was impressed by the changes brought to Pariyar's village in Ghorka, Nepal. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social and Political Systems at Pine Manor College and has a Master of Arts from Clark University in International Development and Social Change. Pariyar has defied a 2,000-year-old caste system by becoming an educated Dalit woman. She is going even further, breaking down the rigid Hindu caste system of Nepal by empowering other Dalit women through education and micro-finance groups. She was the driving force behind the Association of Dalit Women of Nepal, now called Empower Dalit Women of Nepal (EDWON).

Please join us in celebrating these great women who will be a joining us for commencement.

Sincerely,

Ellen S. Hurwitz, Interim President

Since 2009, a group of Pine Manor College students have put their Spring Break week to use, working hard for the Common Good. Each March, students head to New Orleans to help restore the area after thedevastating impact of Hurricanes Katrina (2005), and Hurricane Isaac(2012). While there, the group volunteers with the organization GulfCoast Volunteers for the Long Haul, which not only works to rebuild homesfor people still displaced by the damage, but also tutors children inschools that are still feeling the effects of the tragedy.
As a service-learning experience, students participate in a class thatmeets before and after the trip, helping them to understand the social, political, environmental, and socio-economic factors that contributed tothe situation leading up to and after the hurricanes hit. Students doreflection prior to and after their trip, and process the experience as agroup while they are there.

This year, Lisa Rodrigues - Director of Residence Life and CommunityEngagement and Aisha Ellis - Campus Nurse chaperoned students TiffanyMedina, Regine Albin, Tanairas Flores, Tatyana Parham, Lacree Robinson, and Sheyla Sanches to New Orleans. The group was able to work on twohomes. We worked on Ms. Cynthia's home for four days. The house was init's foundation stage. We all learned how to hang drywall and went towork. On the last day, rooms had been defined by the walls that we hungand we were able to complete 4 out of 5 rooms! We also had the pleasureof working on Mr. Rod's home during our off time. There we painted theoutside of his house, organized the inside, and truly got to know Mr. Rodand his years in New Orleans. On our last day the team put in all we hadleft to work on the St. Bernard headquarters which was also affected byHurricane Isaac. There the team laid tile, carpet, and also createdshelving for storage.

When the team wasn't working hard on homes, we were able to explore thehistory of New Orleans, visited the Katrina Memorial, and enjoyed theamazing New Orleans cuisine!

All in all the experience was AMAZING yet again! The students raise 100%of the funds necessary to make this trip happen. Many resources‹bothfinancial and volunteer‹that were devoted to this area right after thehurricanes have now disappeared, but there is still so much to be done. Please consider donating to Alternative Spring Break! Any amount would beextremely helpful to keep this initiative going. Please contact LisaRodrigues - lrodrigues@pmc.edu for donations.

Dear Friends,

Last Thursday our community lost Michele Talbot. Since she joined Pine Manor in 1972, she has been a teacher and mentor to countless students and a colleague and friend to many alumnae, faculty, and staff. Michele was a teacher and scholar and always a student. She led by the example of her persistent inquiry, her common sense, and most important, her unfailing confidence in the College and its students. Michele’s was a life that inspired and a life to celebrate.
