Chestnut Hill, MA -- Pine Manor junior Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower Catholic School for Girls) scored five goals and sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Tenzca (South Meriden, CT/Platt) made 20 saves to help lead Pine Manor to a 12-11 victory over visiting Daniel Webster College on Monday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, MA. The win is the first of the 2011 season for Pine Manor, as well as the first collegiate coaching victory for head coach Erica Adams.

The teams, meeting for the second time in four days, exchanged goals throughout a wild contest. Daniel Webster took an early lead in the contest, with Stephanie Zeman (Jefferson Township, NJ/Jefferson Township) putting the Eagles up 3-0 4:59 into the first with her first of three goals in the game.

Deegan would then score twop goals of her own to pull the Gators within one, before Daniel Webster sophomore Samantha Cotoni (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) and Zemen each netted a goal but the visitor back up by three. Deegan once again would respond for Pine Manor, scoring the third of her five first-half goals with 13:42 remaining.

Cotoni then put another shot in the back of the net on a free position attempt just 41 seconds later to help Daniel Webster maintain the three goal cushion. However, the Eagles had no answer for Deegan as she scored twice more to bring Pine Manor within one at 6-5.

With Pine Manor trailing 7-5 with 6:31 remaining in the first, the Gators would score three unanswered goals to take an 8-7 lead into the half. PMC junior Jennifer Gross (Coral Springs, Fl/Coral Glades) scored with 3:33 to go in the first before sophomore captain Margaret Roberts (Allentown, PA/Louis E. Dieruff) netted her first of the game. Gross would then add another to make the score 8-7 in favor of the Gators.

Daniel Webster quickly tied the score coming out of the break when junior Alexa Quintiliani (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet) scored 31 seconds into the half. However, the Gators would then strike three times to pull ahead 11-8, thanks to goals by Deegan, Gross, and freshman Tamara Sakala (Zambia, Africa/Kasisi Girls Secondary School).

However, just after scoring the go-ahead goal 59 seconds into the second half, Deegan received her second yellow card of the game and Pine Manor’s leading scorer was forced to watch the remainder of the game from the sideline. Daniel Webster would then score twice more, cutting the deficit to two before PMC sophomore Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB, Canada/Rivier East Collegiate) netted the eventual game-winning goal on an assist from Roberts with 12:21 remaining.

The win brings Pine Manor’s overall record to 1-5, while the Eagles of Daniel Webster drop top 1-10 on the season.

Daniel Webster Tops Gators, 12-9

<itunes:author>Sports Information</itunes:author>

Nashua, NH -- PMC junior Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower Catholic) scored five goals and helped Pine Manor race out to a 5-0 lead early in the first half before the Gators dropped a 12-9 decision to Daniel Webster College on Friday in Nashua, NH.

Manley's seven points came on six goals, both career bests for the midfielder. Fellow sophomore Beth Deegan followed with five goals and tied for game-high honors with seven ground balls, and midfielders Myrell Redmond and Elaine Rodriguez added two goals each.

The Amcats stormed out to a 5-0 lead with four different players scoring in the first 14 minutes. Manley and Redmond stopped the bleeding with back-to-back goals within 40 seconds of each other midway through the first. Anna Maria answered with two goals of its own, taking a 9-2 lead with under 9:00 remaining in the half.

Jess Blair's club, which scored only three goals in Saturday's loss to Mount Ida, rallied in a major way going into halftime. Deegan scored just 13 seconds after the Amcats went up by seven, and Rodriguez, Manley and Deegan then alternated goals, respectively, to crawl within 9-6. After another Deegan score, her and Manley then each completed their hat tricks with goals in the final 2:00 to go into halftime trailing 9-8 after six straight Gators goals.

The home team, however, regained momentium coming out of the locker room, in part due to Gators penalties. Leading 10-9 with 27:00 remaining, Anna Maria ripped off five straight goals, three at plus-strength after a Deegan yellow card, to open up a 15-9 lead a the midway point of the second. Sophomore Katie Schebel was the difference maker, not just in the streak, but in the game, as her fifth and sixth goals capped the run that would ultimately decide the contest.

Pine Manor forged a late rally with two straight Manley goals and sophomore Kasey Jeronimo's first as a Gator, but penalties again cost the Gators. Anna Maria benefitted from two goals in the wake of a Glenn Grushko yellow card to take a 19-14 lead with under 3:00 remaining. Manley and Deegan found the back of the net in response, but to no avail, as the Gators fell 19-16.

Schebel led all players with seven goals, also a career high. Sanday Acosta tied Deegan with seven ground balls, as the Amcats outshot the Gators 39-26 and bested Pine Manor 35-23 in ground balls in improving to 1-3.

For the Gators, Colleen Tencza made a game-high 10 saves.

BOSTON – Pine Manor lacrosse dropped its season opener, losing 18-3 to Mount Ida on a wet, windy Saturday afternoon at the Winsor School in Boston.

The visiting Mustangs have now won their only two games since becoming an NCAA and Great Northeast Athletic Conference program. Junior Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) led all players with nine goals and 17 shots, this on the heels of a 10-goal effort in Mount Ida’s 19-4 win against Anna Maria.

Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) led the Pine Manor, which played down with two goals and five shots. Playing in her first collegiate game, Myrell Redmond found the back of the net on one of her three shots, tying Deegan for team-high honors with two ground balls.

Pabon’s .430 average in GNAC play trailed only Wallace’s .438 clip. Wallace led the team in overall batting average (.405), hits (46), runs (28), total bases (78), on-base percentage (.432), slugging (.656) and at-bats (113), boasting a .690 slugging percentage carried by five homers, four triples and nine doubles. The catcher tied for second on the team in RBI’s, with 27.

Pabon led the team with 13 doubles in 112 at-bats, placing second with a .423 on-base percentage. She also finished season second on the Gators in hits (42), ranking among the team leaders in runs (28), slugging (.518) and walks (10). Perhaps most importantly, the senior almost flawlessly transitioned from the backstop to shortstop while finishing the regular season with a .966 fielding percentage.

Possibly the team’s most consistent stick, Ferrara came on the scene and instantly became one of the league’s most feared sluggers. The freshman outfielder led the team with eight homers and 31 RBI’s, finishing second in slugging percentage (.633), runs (30) and total bases (81) and third in hitting (.328), on-base percentage (.377) and walks (9).

The versatility that found her at catcher, shortstop and third base earned Nielsen (below, right) third team utility player honors. In addition to her flexibility afield, she also enjoyed a stellar freshman campaign at the plate, hitting .313 while also finishing fourth on the club in hits (40), runs (23) on-base percentage (.350) and slugging percentage (.445).
Perhaps the team’s streakiest hitter, Mannino exposed flashes of power to earn her third team designated player honors, a stroke that will keep her in the middle of Deusser’s line-up for years to come. Mannino’s 27 RBI’s tied Wallace for second on the club, her eight walks tied Ferrara for third, and her three home runs tied Nielsen for third on the team.

For Jess Blair's Gators, Rodriguez led the team in scoring for a second season in a row, tallying 36 goals and three assists. The junior (below) has been instrumental in the rebuilding of the Pine Manor lacrosse program, which, at 4-8, won its first games since reacquiring NCAA status three seasons ago. She finished eighth in the conference in goals per game (3.09) and ninth in points per game (3.36), also leading the Gators with 56 shots.

Freshman Beth Deegan was named GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team. The Philadelphia native finished third on the Gators with 24 goals and 26 points, leading the team with 28 ground balls.
CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Pine Manor (4-8) celebrated its Senior Day with a 14-6 win over Daniel Webster (1-8) Tuesday afternoon, getting five goals from leading scorer Elaine Rodriguez and career-highs of four scores and two assists from freshman Molly Manley.
Not to be overshadowed on the day on which she would suit up in the green and white for the final time was Pine Manor goalie Angeline Capre, who held the Eagles to one goal in the final 26:00 and stopped seven of nine shots on goal in a second half dominated by her Gators. Capre (Dorchester, MA/Madison Park) totaled nine saves, a number of them from point-blank range, in her final game in Chestnut Hill.
The Gators started out sluggish, with Daniel Webster jumping out to a 3-1 lead on Shawna Kavanagh’s (Abington, MA/Abington) second goal at the 12:39 mark of the first half. After Rodriguez (Bronx, NY/Banana Kelly) raced in to score 13 seconds later, Natalie Bates (N. Kingstown, RI/N. Kingstown) scored just 10 seconds after that, again putting the Eagles up two goals, this time 4-2, where the score would stay until the closing minutes of the half.
From the closing minutes of the first onward, though, this one belonged to the Gators. After a beautiful feed from Victoria Garcia (Westfield, MA/Westfield) set up Manley for her first goal of the game, Manley (E. Greenbush, NY/Columbia) returned the favor on Rodriguez’s third goal of the half, which tied the game, 4-4,
Ten seconds later, the Gators grabbed the lead and never relinquished, with Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) scoring her first of two goals after scoring three last night against Becker. Manley got on the board for a third time, this time off a feed from Glenn Grushko (Orange County, NY/Solomon Schechter) with 32 seconds remaining, sending Pine Manor in to halftime leading 6-4.
After Bates’ second goal of the game cut the deficit to one, senior Stephanie Ludwig got in the act in her final game as a Gator, scoring one of her three second-half goals. Deegan’s second score put Pine Manor ahead 8-5 at the 25:00 mark, and Jess Blair’s club turned two Daniel Webster yellow cards that resulted in 5:12 of plus-strength play into four goals in under a 4:00 span, putting the Gators up 12-5.
In her finale as a Gator, Ludwig picked up a three-goal hat trick and fired six shots on goal. Fellow senior Essence Denton (Chicago, IL/Woodlands Academy) scooped up two ground balls to close out her career.
The Gators finish a productive season on a high note, winning three of the team’s last five games and, at 4-8, earning the program’s first victories since reacquiring NCAA Division III status three seasons ago. The Eagles return to Nashua, NH to end their season on a two-game homestand, playing Green Mountain on Friday and Thomas on Monday.

Becker’s Mullen sets NCAA goals record in eight-goal effort

CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Entering the game with 106 scores, Becker College’s sophomore midfielder Tammy Mullen broke the NCAA single-season goals record and led the Hawks to a 17-14 win over Pine Manor Monday evening.
Mullen (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) finished with eight goals, breaking the former record of 111, set by Wheaton’s Therese Ross in 1986.
Becker needed every one of her goals today, too. Leading 13-9 with 13:00 remaining, the Gators embarked on a 4-0 run in which all four of the Gators leading scorers netted goals. Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) started the rally at the 12:20 mark, Stephanie Ludwig (Henniker, NH/John Stark) added her fourth goal of the game 22 seconds later on Molly Manley’s pinpoint pass from behind the net, then Manley (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) got the Gators to within one less than a minute later with a goal of her own.
At the 8:33 mark, Elaine Rodriguez (Bronx, NY/Banana Kelly) tied the contest 13-13 with her team-leading 31st goal of the season. This day, however, belonged to Becker’s newly-crowned scoring royalty, and with the game in the balance is when Mullen took over.
The sophomore scored three consecutive unanswered goals – the first of which gave here the NCAA record at the 8:03 mark – in under five minutes to distance the Hawks and ultimately send them on their way to victory. Her plus-strength score after a Cassie Acer yellow card put the Hawks up 16-13 at the 3:40 mark, and Samly Phonesavanh’s team evened its record at 8-8.
For Pine Manor, which falls to 3-8, Angeline Capre (Dorchester, MA/Madison Park) made 12 saves in goal. Rodriguez finished with five goals, while Ludwig and Deegan added four and three, respectively.
Becker’s Alena Phongsa (Putnam, CT/Putnam) got the win, making nine stops in net for the Hawks, which also got four goals from Nicole Lijana (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown).
The Gators wrap up their season tomorrow in a Senior Day affair with Daniel Webster at Hedley Field at 4:00.
