We have participated in activities such as Stress Busters, late night breakfast, bingo and a softball game with the Pine Manor Athletics staff. These activities definitely help bring together all of Pine Manor's students, professors, staff and coaches and always guarantee we have a great time.

A lot of students appreciate Stress Busters because it is a way of relaxing after a hard semester and before having to study for finals. This time around, one of the activities I really enjoyed was making a mother’s day card. Homemade cards are always the best and I know for a fact that my mom loves them because we make them each year for her. They had all sorts of examples to help us with ideas. Some cards were very creative and decorative. Inside my card I decided to write a poem for my mom. Hopefully she will appreciate the rhyme scheme. I tried, and that is all that matters.

While we were making our cards they had milk and cookies. Everyone knows how much I LOVE milk. I was so happy. After I made my card and filled my tummy I got a massage. I do not know why I get them because my back is so ticklish. The lady kept poking me and I was giggling the whole time. She must have thought I was a weird one. You should have seen my face. I was trying so hard not to laugh and you know what happens when you do that. You spit out your mouth. Oh man. That was too much fun. Well after stress busters ended we headed over to late night breakfast and bingo.

This, like stress busters, only happens twice during the school year and practically the whole campus shows up to win great prizes. Bingo is like a sport to most people. They take it very seriously and get in some crazy stances. It’s a great atmosphere to be in. We laugh almost every second of it. We always have the athletes verse everyone else. It is so fun because we get so excited when an athlete wins. We start hooting and hollering. I just have to say that we had the bingo God’s on our side last night. I don’t know how many times we won. Michelle Meyers won a handbag, Amanda Smalley won movies and popcorn, Roux Spartan won a camera and Chelsea Swiger won an iPod player. We did not want the night to end. On top of playing and extreme game of bingo we ate some amazing food. We had eggs, bacon, French toast, pancakes, sausages, and fruit. It was bomb and of course I had seconds; who didn’t. One last event of the week that we were all waiting for was the softball game.

Softball is not really my sport but I appreciate it now. I would always tease Kaylyn about how it requires no talent, but boy was I wrong. I have battle wounds from the game. It was very hard. Catching was hard and hitting the ball. I would swing and almost pull my shoulder out of its socket. Everyone enjoyed the game and it went very well. We had a few people score homeruns. The first was my biggest inspiration Kaylyn Delgado. She hit one right to right field. It was amazing and I finally got to run home. She is amazing. The second person who is a hulk like hitter was Ryan McCarthy. He is very good at hitting homeruns. There is no stopping him. He was doing all these crazy loves also. He loves his sports. Congrats to the pitchers: Michelle Cambell, Michelle Meyers, Sivan T, and Jess. They were great. Don’t think I forgot all of the base players and field players: Kristi, Roux, Santos, Glenn, Cory, Kasey, Jason, Erin, and V. Everyone did an amazing job and I can wait for the next pick-up game. We came, we saw, we conquered!

Margaret Roberts: Before We Go Our Separate Ways

<itunes:author>Margaret Roberts</itunes:author>

This week has been full of memories that I will not forget. We are doing as many things as possible before we have to go back to our homes. It’s upsetting because Kaylyn, Amanda, Linds and I have become really close and we don’t want to leave. The first adventure we went on was to the Cambridge Mall, Longhorn and Coldstone.

Since none of us have our license or have a car for that matter, we took the T into Cambridge. It was my first time going into this part of the city, so I was very excited. Also, I can honestly say that I have not been to a mall in a long time. It’s not really my thing to do because it involves spending, and spending is not my forte, but I had fun so I was glad I went. When we got to the mall, right outside it was this huge fountain. It was beautiful and I made some wishes. The mall was nothing like the one in Allentown, PA. It has three huge floors, and was so decorative and upbeat. Everyone was “fresh,” and I had my hiking boots on.

Kaylyn took me to Borders! It was exciting. We went into stores like Yankee Candle, Foot Locker, and looked for clothes. One store that I bought something in was Claire’s. That is my favorite store. I bought my sister Katie some of the soccer ball earrings exactly like mine for her birthday. She is going to love them. When we left the mall, I was satisfied that I only spent about $5. After the mall, we headed back to Fenway to have dinner and ice cream.

We ate at the Longhorn restaurant next to the movie theater. I ordered my usual; chicken fingers and fries. It was so filling. I could not walk after I finished my meal. Everyone was wearing their Boston Red Sox shirts because the game had just been going on. I am really glad that Longhorn had milk. It was delicious and the mug was pretty cool.

After we went there we stretched and walked next door to Coldstone. When I first heard of Coldstone, I envisioned another restaurant. It is, in fact, an ice cream place. There were so many choices but when I saw Germanchokolatekake, I needed to try it. It was delicious. When we went back to the T this one guy even wanted some. He was so funny (and obviously not above the influence). We finally got back for the night and went to Amanda’s room to have a sleepover like old times.

We watched “Law Abiding Citizen,” with Gerard Butler. Wow!! It was such a great movie. I was sidetracked a lot by Mr. Butler, though. He was such a smart man in the movie and of course very hot. I wish the movie would have ended differently. Sadly, I did not want the cops to win the battle. He should have pulled out his spear and shield. He would have conquered the city. Before we watched the movie, we all brought our mattresses into Amanda’s room and slept on the floor. It was super fun. We also took crazy pictures on her computer. This was a very fun day, and I could not have been any happier.

We shall soon have another night like this because we leave on May 5th. That is sooner that you think!

Margaret Roberts: Coming to an End

<itunes:author>Margaret Roberts</itunes:author>

School is almost over and it is very upsetting. My teammates and I have all become so much closer, and we are going to have to wait a couple months to see each other again! We are planning trips to Six Flags and the beach so we can hang out over the summer. I can’t wait.

During the summer, all I am going to be doing is getting ready for soccer and working. That does not sound very exciting, but I am sure I will try my best to have fun. I have my wonderful family at home and we always have fun, so it will most likely be a great summer. Mr. Whushu is FINALLY going to be alive. He loves summer. He always goes outside and either lies in the grass or hides in the cherry tomato patch. He is a different person in the summer because he is not afraid of the weather.

Well, with school coming to an end that means lacrosse is coming to an end. I have formed a bond with my lacrosse teammates, so I will dearly miss them. This week alone, we have spent too many hours on the shuttle taking us from school to a destination. On Monday it was Rivier College. We wanted to wear our du-rags so badly, but maybe next time we will. We had such a fun time during the game and we played like we wanted it. It was a great feeling. Our transitions were amazing. It went from the goalie to a defender then a midfielder then an attack. We got it down and it was a great feeling. They were a good team but we held them. It feels great that everyone worked their hardest to play and unite as a team.

The next game was on Wednesday, and we faced Elms College. We did not play as well as we played on Monday but we did manage to win, 11-10. It was a very scary game for Glenn and me because we were the only defenders. We had to mark up on four girls. We were positive and kept yelling “Lady Huskies!!” to stay positive and it worked. Glenn was loud and positive, and I like having that in a teammate. It made me play that much better. It made me want every ground ball, every draw, and every interception. Even though our attack got a little carried away in the end, we did hold them and it felt great to win another game.

This Saturday we have a game verse Husson in Maine. That will be a long trip, but hopefully we come together and work as a team!

Margaret Roberts: Catapult Crazy

<itunes:author>Margaret Roberts</itunes:author>

My week has consisted of homework, lacrosse, and more homework. I have been up until crazy times trying to finish my homework on time. It feels like each teacher gave us every hard assignment due this week.

One assignment, though, was definitely worth the loss of sleep. His name is Fredrick Spartan Jr. and “he” is our catapult. By ours, I mean Elaine’s and mine. We are in calculus together and our project was to make a catapult that could launch distances of 5ft, 10ft, 15ft, and 20ft. It took us a long time to figure out a design because we wanted something cheap and that would be strong enough to launch. We decided to make it out of pencils.

So, Tuesday night after lacrosse practice we went to her house and got started. It was harder then it seemed. We were thinking we were going to blow through, it but in no time it was 2:00 in the morning. We used handy dandy duct tape, rubber bands, a children book, and molly’s tablespoon. The highlight of my night was when Elaine went to the store to get more rubber bands and came back with two mouse traps. It was strange but she told us the story. She went into the store with all the change from her car and asked the guy behind the counter if he sold rubber bands and he said we have band aids. So from there she bought mouse traps. The only thing we had left was to do the work that came with the catapult.

After practice on Wednesday night we met in the art building so she could print out pictures and work on the math. We thought this was going to take about an hour but we were fooled. Trust me – we will not be fooled again. Next time we will start a day before. Well, for the math part we had to fire a pretend arrow from five different locations and get a formula. This had to do with quadratics and parabolas. To make it trickier, when we launched the arrow, we had to clear a wall and make it into the castle. This involved making the vertex high enough so it could get over the wall and reach the target point inside. After we figured out the equations we had to graph them on a separate piece of paper. I believe this took the longest because we had to be the most accurate. They all worked out, though, and we were so excited to present Fredrick Spartan Jr. on Thursday.

We met in calculus class around 2:30, and we were so nervous about the competition. I know Fredrick did not want to lose, but I assured him that we would not. Every other group had theirs and, of course, we were comparing to see if we had an advantage. The first advantage that Fredrick had on all his opponents was that he was stronger than them. Instead of pulling the tablespoon back with one rubber band, we had two or four. We figured out that the more tension you have pulling an object back, the further it will go when released. If we did not figure this out, we would have never made the twenty feet.

Now the competition began. He made the five feet we suspected. Then the ten feet was reached. Fifteen feet was harder because we did not know how far to pull the tablespoon back. But twenty feet was no problem. Fredrick was a champion and he pulled through. He even won the bonus because he shot the ball the farthest. He definitely moved up in the world of catapulting. If anyone wants to challenge him, he will be ready at any moment. Prepare yourself, Joe!

This competition was by far the most fun I have had yet at Pine Manor College! I am looking forward to more!!

Margaret Roberts: Home Sweet Home

<itunes:author>Margaret Roberts</itunes:author>

At the start of the week, I was praying for this week to go fast because I finally got to go home on Thursday night with Amanda. The week flew by and here I am sitting on my front porch, in Allentown, PA, with my sister Katie, enjoying the upper 70-degree weather. My journey from the unknown was extreme and very tiring.

We headed to South Station in Boston around 4:15 p.m. and it was a trip I will never forget. It consisted of jamming to rap music, showing our best dance moves, and rolling down the windows and asking for directions. I believe we all know how to get to South Station now. The one guy we asked said, “Just go straight until you can go no more.” So, if you want to go to South Station, just go straight until you cannot go any further.

Now that we all know that, as soon as we got into the station we went up two flights to gate 9. This was my first time going anywhere on a bus for more than one or two hours. We got on the bus and headed out. For about the first hour, the bus kept stopping and going due to the heavy traffic. It seemed that traffic was backed up for miles and miles so that was my cue to take a nap. I have to say that it was very uncomfortable. First, the chair was perfectly erect. They must want everyone to have perfect posture. Second, the uncontrollable stopping and going of the bus kept giving my neck whiplash. I survived and got some sleep, so that was good.

The next stage was AWESOME!! This one lady from the back asked me if we could switch seats because I was not using the plug. So, being Margaret Roberts, I could not deny her. I grabbed my bags and moved to the back. This was where I met a guy who loved playing the bricklayer game on his iPod. It was quite hilarious. His legs were crammed against the seat in front of him and he looked extremely awkward. He made my night better, though, because of how extreme he got with bricklayer. He was shaking and talking to the iPod. I definitely brightened my mood by a couple of percent.

We finally made it to the Tick Tock diner in New York and Amanda and I were so glad. We got off and ran to her mother’s car!!! We were off. It was about 10 p.m. We drove for awhile and listened to pop and country music. Amanda was singing sweet nothings in my ear!! We got to her house around 12 and Katie, Jordan and Mom were there waiting for me. I was so excited. We hugged and did all that affectionate stuff you do when you see people you have not seen in a long time.

We had a very fun night and prepared ourselves for the morning. I went with Katie on a run and we played soccer all day. It was so much fun. We did not want to stop, but unfortunately the sun went down and the darkness prevented us from playing. That did not stop us from playing in the house and almost breaking everything. Friday night, we watched “Where the Wild Things Are.” It was a very strange, sad and hilarious movie. The message I got from it was that being a family is hard and I thought that was a great message, but not for a children’s movie. It should have been more fun. It was well done, though, and the wild beasts were well animated. It was amazing.

Saturday, I went to Katie’s soccer practice and watched some of my former high school team mates going at it. Katie was a total SPARTAN!! I just want to say that Joe came up to me and said hi and asked me how I was doing. One step up in the world for me.

Well, that concludes my journey home, and I am looking forward for my next adventure.

Margaret Roberts: Losing Phones, Winning Games

<itunes:author>Margaret Roberts</itunes:author>

Have you ever lost something that was very dear to your heart before? Well, I have never really experienced it up until this past week.

The Lacrosse team just finished dinner and we left the café. I thought I had my phone on me because I was showing someone my screen saver. I usually leave my ID or my keys somewhere, but I always remember a short while later and retrieve them. This time I walked all the way to my room and did not even think about my phone. Getting my homework done was my first priority. So about twenty minutes passed and I wondered why I had not heard from my mother and I started to search for my phone and I absolutely could not find it anywhere. My roommate called and called it, but still nothing. This called for a scavenger hunt to retrace my steps. I went from East 3 to the cafeteria about ten times and it just was not there. Who would have taken my phone? But then again it is the coolest phone in the world. I called my mother on my roommate’s phone and we were talking about canceling the phone and stuff until one of my friends came into the room and gave me my phone. She picked it up at the café and forgot to give it to me.!!! This was a crazy experience that lasted way too long.

On an amazing note, we won our lacrosse game at St. Joseph (CT), 10-8. It was a great game. It was our first conference win and we were so thrilled. Roux made a warm up cd, and we were jamming the whole way there. It was so much fun. While listening to the cd one song came on called “Shout,” by the Isley Brothers and we were not expecting that one bit. It was hilarious and we kept shouting it after we got off the bus and when we scored goals. It is officially our team song. It pumps us up at any time. It’s that amazing. I advise you to listen to it if you have never heard it before. So, after the game we all gathered on the shuttle and blasted the song and had a team dance secession. It was so much fun. We could have played another game we were so pumped up.

I am personally glad we worked as a team and we completed our goals that we set before the game. It felt good to win a conference game. Hopefully we see more in the games to come.

Margaret Roberts: Busy, Busy, Busy

<itunes:author>Margeret Roberts </itunes:author>

This week has been a very tough week with school and lacrosse. Time could not be any less on my side. That hour that we lost for daylight savings seemed like a lot. The classes I have this semester are world literature, children’s literature, government, composition, and pre-calculus, and the homework seems never ending. I finish an assignment for one class and I still have others to finish.

The big assignments I have to complete are a research paper and an essay, and the research paper is very difficult because I need to have a lot of information and there are only a certain amount of credible websites. I am doing it on the psychology behind Hitler. What motivated him to do what he did and who were his prime influences during and before his reign? The library has really helped me because they have the perfect books, but we can’t just use books. I am going to literally spend every waking hour in the library so I can finish this paper. My essay can be written about a certain short story or poem we have read in class. This paper will definitely help me relax after writing the research paper. If you don’t see me around this weekend it is only because my homework needs to be completed.

LACROSSE!! I have fallen in love with the sport. We have had our first three games and they have gone so fast. I am not used to playing 30 minute half’s because in soccer we play 45 minutes. I know I can work my butt of every second of the half though. Time also flies. I feel like we just started the game. These three games have been about working together for my teammates and I. We have not been successful in winning but we have learned how to become more of a cohesive unit. From the first to the third game there have been less eight-meter shots for the opposing team and less fouls called on us. Defense is working hard and hearing that from our coach only makes us want to work harder. In our game on Saturday we won a ton of draws. I was very proud of my teammates. Towards the end of the game you could see us transitioning the ball up the field. It was nice to see. I am so excited for our next game on Tuesday.

Margaret Roberts: Gone With the Wind

<itunes:author>Margaret Roberts</itunes:author>

Lacrosse Home 2010 Schedule Poster (1KB/PDF)

Spring break is coming to an end, and it brings tears to my eyes. It has truly been a week of bonding, practicing and having fun. I can tell you that I have not left Roux and Jess P’s side, either. We planned out things to do each day and we cannot stand to be away from each other now. One game we loved playing was Uno. Oh man!! It was getting really intense with the draw-twos and wild draw-fours, but it was so worth it.

I cannot forget about the almighty Rockband. We went into the city and not only bought Rockband I but Rockband II. We had amazing jam secessions where we obtained five stars and 30,000 fans. It was amazing and definitely kept us busy for hours at a time. If anyone wants to join our band, we are holding auditions!

One event we really enjoyed doing was going to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D. Boy, it was fun. We LOVED our 3D glasses so much that we have been wearing them to lacrosse practice and dinner. The movie was great but I believe it could have been better. Johnny Depp was still gorgeous as usual. I love how the blue caterpillar’s voice was Snape’s from Harry Potter. It made me giggle in the theater. I really love how the animators constructed the soldiers. They looked amazing and so real.

Some other movies we watched during the week were Land of the Lost and Year One. Land of the Lost was OK. The one blood-sucking bud scene was absurdly funny. I love how they just stared as the bug flew on him. Year One was definitely a comedy. It had all these biblical references and Jack Black was hilarious as usual.

I am excited to say that we have our first lacrosse game tomorrow (1 p.m, Winsdor Field). I really am pumped because we are a really strong team. I am glad we are getting to play on turf before our game to get used to it a little bit. It is a thousand times different than playing on a gym floor. Plus, we have to consider that it might rain tomorrow and it’s going to be harder to control the ball. I am probably going to play defense at the game and I am excited to show our opponents who’s boss. This is the moment I have been waiting for and I am going to give it my all. You either go big or go home, and we definitely do not want to go home!

Margaret Roberts: Spring is in the Air

<itunes:author>Margaret Roberts</itunes:author>

[Ed.: This is the first installment of freshman lacrosse player Margaret Roberts' weekly student-athlete blog, an area in which she'll provide readers a glimpse into life as a Gator both on and off the field, as well as on campus and beyond.]

I am so glad that spring break is here because school, lacrosse and work have been hectic.

I have finally put my syllabus aside for a whole week. It’s so relieving to know that I can play Rockband ALL the time!! The past month on campus, there have been many amazing events going on. First was the dance ensemble’s “Dare to Be” performance. I just want to say that it was amazing. I like how they invited outside dancers to perform. All the ladies and gents definitely showed us who was boss. From the show, I learned how to “Vogue.” When the word was said it directly made me think of the magazine, but it assured me that it was not that. It was really cool and was a great event to bring the Pine Manor community together.

The next event that I just loved was the Faculty vs. Student basketball game. It was so much fun and a ton of people showed up. Roux was an amazing coach and knew who to put in at what time. I had a team that consisted of T.J, Jess Pinckney, Nicha and Santos, and we did an amazing job. Jess got a three-pointer and the crowd went wild. Ryan did a great job on the opposing team, but too bad I was stopping him from making amazing plays. I don’t believe you are allowed to body check, so maybe I was breaking the rules a tad bit. I just loved the atmosphere, though. I wished the game went on forever. I am proud to say that we beat the faculty. I am sure they would love to face us again. I smell another victory for us students.

This is my first year playing lacrosse, and I have to say that it is a blast. Everyone on our team works together and I am looking forward to our first game. We are going to do so well. I am a defender, and learning how to position yourself is hard, but I have learned it. The rules are really strict, so we have to be very cautious. I am used to going all out for soccer (left) but in lacrosse you have to watch about how aggressive you become. Technically, the stick is a weapon. I can only get better, so I am excited for the season to start!

For now, I will enjoy my break. I have Rockband and lacrosse to worry about. Jam secessions, of course, will be fun and nothing is better than playing sports. It will be a fun week and hopefully it seems like it will last forever!

Alicia Grenier: Fun Times on the Road

<itunes:author>Alicia Grenier</itunes:author>

This week started off with us traveling to St. Joe’s (CT). Traveling there was different from any other games that we traveled because this time be took a big Coach bus and had the volleyball and tennis teams with us. In the back of the bus was myself, Santos, Roux, Lindsey, Stacie, Colleen, Margaret, and T.J. We were having so much fun just hanging out and talking about the game and what we were going to be for Halloween. Also the tennis coach, Chris, came to the back with a huge bag of bagels from Dunkin Donuts and was like “Here, have one!,” to each of us in the back. It was so funny.

When we got to St. Joe’s we noticed that it was Senior Day, and it seems like every team loves to play us on their Senior Day. Well, we shut them down in the first half and almost the entire second, but they got away from us and scored two goals to beat us 2-0. I was satisfied with the score considering it was better than last year, and I knew that with our injuries that we had we really held ourselves.

When we walked back onto that bus we were laughing and having a ton of fun. Then Chris came to the back and hung out with us while he was finishing watching his movie, “Untraceable,” on his laptop. We were all trying to watch it because he would come out of nowhere and say “Oh My God! Did that just happen?,” so we wanted to see what was going on, but it was pretty hard to see the screen. On the way home we had a lot of laughs and watched “Gone in 60 Seconds.” The ride was by far the best ride I’ve ever had because we had so much fun together.

After St. Joe’s we played Mount Ida and fell to them 2-0, and lost to Lasell 4-1. Both were hard losses for the returners because we were successful against them last year.

This past week has been real laid back because there was barely any homework given to me and I did not have to work at City Sports this week, so that was a break. One thing that I have been working on is my residents’ door tags and bulletin board for the month of November. I have no idea what I am going to do for my door tags, but as I’m writing this, I believe that I have found the right one!

Next week is our last week, which is very sad because I really don’t want the season to end. We have a game on Saturday against Daniel Webster and our last game on Tuesday against Suffolk. I’m hoping that we come out of both of those games with a win and end our season on a high note!

Our coach, Cory Kinsella, raced in the Boston Athletic Association Half Marathon, and it was presented by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy fund. This is a great fundraising race because it is helping a great cause. The Dana-Farber Institute is one of the best in Massachusetts. I know this from experience with my Nana because she suffered from breast cancer, but she was helped and cured because of how great they really are. Cory really did a great thing helping the Institute. She finished in 1 hour, 43 minutes and 53 seconds! She was extremely happy about her time. I remember we were getting ready for an indoor practice and she was looking through her Blackberry and she said, “Oh my god! I did better than I thought I would!” We were all very proud of her! Great job, Cory!

Saturday we had a game against Emmanuel College and we lost to them, 7-0, which was disappointing. They were the top team in the conference and we actually got some good shots on them. After our game I went home and visit my nana, mom, uncle, and my baby cousin. Right when I walked into the house my cousin remembered me and started smiling and wanting me to hold him. I was so scared that he was going to forget about me because I wasn’t around for two whole months, but he did. I hung around Jamestown, Rhode Island all day Sunday until I had to make my way back up to school for practice because we had a Monday game against Albertus Magnus. We played them and lost again, which was a bummer.

However, Wednesday’s game was against Mitchell College, and we finally came out with a much-deserved win, 4-3. It was a close game the entire time and we kept pushing ourselves until we really had nothing left. I scored a hat trick, which I never thought was going to happen because every time that I took a shot after the 2nd one it kept going left, right or over the goal. Amanda Smalley had a beautiful penalty kick, which sealed the game. Roux and I were definitely connecting this game because she assisted on two of my goals and she was on fire!

The rest of the week was pretty boring. All I had was resident assistant duty Thursday night, and then I had to wake up early Friday morning and work at City Sports, then we had practice from 3-5. See you next week!

It started with our first out-of-town away game at Mass Maritime Academy. The day started like any other day, with everyone going to class, and then around 3:45 p.m. we all met at the gym to get in the bus or van. Roux (Beth Deegan), Michelle, Kasey, Santos, Cory, Ryan, our sports information director, and I were all in the van.

Prior to getting in the car I glanced at the directions to see where we were actually going. While we were driving we were talking about the game and games to come after Mass Maritime. So as were driving down 95, we missed the exit that we were supposed to take and ended up all the way in Rhode Island. I turned on my GPS and that quickly got us back on the right track. We had a nice tour of Pawtucket, thanks to Santos, who's from there, and then quickly scooted on our way back to Massachusetts. We showed up just in time to start warming up before our game.

After a long game, we came out with a great win, 4-0! Roux scored two goals, Amanda Smalley scored one, and I scored one and had two assists. We were all so happy after finally winning another game. Afterwards we convinced Cory to bring us to Friendly’s because our teammate Sam had never been to one before because she’s from Wyoming. We didn’t end up getting back on campus until about 11, and by then we were all exhausted, but knew that tomorrow was going to be an intense practice for our game on Wednesday against Norwich.

Norwich was a good game. We lost 2-0, but it was far better than last years game. Last year we lost to them 4-0 and didn’t even get the ball on their half of the field. However, this year we got the ball on their half a decent amount of times. Although we lost, we had a big improvement from last year.

Other than soccer, nothing interesting really happened this week. I had classes, RA (resident advisor) duty and a selling clinic at work at City Sports, which was very calm compared to other weeks. I’m looking forward to this weekend because we have a game against Johnson & Wales, which we are all very pumped up for.

Well, I’m heading off to work. Talk to you next week!

I had my first paper due in my controversial issues class, my first project due in my studio arts class, and my first case study due in my adolescent psychology class. I am so happy now that they are done and don’t have to worry about them. However, I know that once Monday comes around, more work will be coming my way.

My week started off with the VMA’s on Sunday night with Sam, Veronica (a.k.a. V), and Chrissy. Before the VMA’s Sam and I went to KFC and pigged out on mashed potatoes, chicken, and mac and cheese. We also watched like 4 episodes of America’s Best Dance Crew and then the Pre-show to the VMA’s. The four of us had fun watching the VMA’s, talking about how awesome Madonna’s speech was on behalf of Michael Jackson, the controversy with Taylor Swift winning “Best Female Video,” and how Beyonce did the right thing with letting Taylor have “her moment.”

This week not only did I have to deal with school and soccer, I had to go home Monday night because I had to go to see my family, the whole time thinking, “I wonder what my teammates are doing at practice right now.” Although I wanted to be at practice I knew that where I needed to be was with my family. My mom, Nana, and uncle mean the world to me. Especially my baby cousin, Talan, who is going to be a year old in just two months, for which I am very excited! I have not seen him in a month and have received pictures from my Uncle and I cannot believe how big he is getting. I miss him a bunch!

This week in soccer we played Rivier College. Although we had a bad outcome, we are hoping to change that this weekend against Emerson College and get ourselves back in the game! I have really high hopes for the team this year, and I really believe that if we all come together and work hard then we will succeed!

Throughout the day on Thursday I was hanging out with V and she was talking about going to the Red Sox game with Courtney (a.k.a. Maine). Instead of practice on Thursday we had a team meeting. Throughout the meeting I got a text that said “We have a ticket for you, you’re coming to the game with us!” and immediately I was like “How? And I’m on RA duty, whose going to cover me?” and V quickly responded with, “Don’t worry, we got it covered.” I was so excited to hear that I was going to the Red Sox game. This was my first game this year, and I was happy that it was with two really good friends, a true Red Sox fan and V, who had never been to a Red Sox game before. Although they lost 4-3 against the Angels, we sang our hearts out to “Take Me out to the Ball Game,” and “Sweet Caroline.” We also decided that Yankee Candle should come out with a scent of what a ballpark smells like. I was so happy after that game because I felt like I had gotten closer with two really fun people.

Well, going to go watch the rest of the Red Sox game and get to bed. Talk to you next week!

So this week has been full of excitement!

We had two games, one against Southern Vermont and the other against Newbury. Our game against Southern Vermont was really good. We got our first win of the season, 7-1. This game was especially exciting for me because I scored four goals for my team. My teammate "Roux" (Beth Deegan) scored two goals, and freshman Sivan Thammachak stepped up and scored her first college goal, which was very exciting. Our second game of the week was against Newbury, and we tied them in two overtimes.

So after two full weeks of classes, I have really started to enjoy them. This semester I’m taking two psychology classes, a composition class and a visual arts class. I’m a psychology major and visual arts minor with a concentration in photography. I hate drawing - I am awful at it - and this class that I’m in is all about drawing. Thankfully my teammate Christina Santos is in class with me, and we make have a good time since neither of us is very good yet. In one of my psych classes, I’m learning about puberty, which is pretty interesting because there is some things that I don’t even remember!

Thursday night I had to deal with my first issue as a R.A., or a resident advisor. I’ve learned a lot already, and I feel more comfortable resolving issues, dealing with confrontations and doing my job. I’m on duty again this weekend, and I’m sure I’ll have a calmer next couple of days. I also started my job at City Sports, which is sure to make my schedule even more hectic!

I’m going to bed (finally), so I’ll talk to you next week!

I was unable to make the afternoon practices because of resident advisor (RA) training and Freshman Orientation. However, I saw a lot of things that I really liked from everyone. By the end of the week, I felt that we were a complete team. The next thing that came to mind, and everyone’s mind, was Wednesday’s game.

Before our first game we decided to have a little fun with Cory, our coach. We wanted to lighten the mood so that we could have an intense but fun week preparing for our first game. Glenn Grushko and I went up to Cory’s office to talk to her about the team and how happy we are to see so many new faces.

While we were upstairs talking with her, the rest of our team placed Post-It notes all over her car windows and wrapped her car up with caution tape. Glenn and I finally got her to come downstairs and as soon as she walked out the door of the gymnasium, she started laughing and saying “Really guys?!” Last year we never did anything like this, so we were really taking a chance because we had absolutely no idea how she was going to react. However, we were happy to know that now we can have fun with our coach and goof around when the time is right.

As for our first game, the thoughts that were going through my head that day were indescribable. I just wanted everyone to come out strong, work hard and give it their all. Right as we stepped on the field to warm-up I could feel the excitement from everyone just coming together. Although we started our season with a loss, it was a positive one. I felt that we held our own and that we definitely had some things to work on, but it was our first game and we have many more to come our way. I know that as time goes on we will be more comfortable playing together.

Off to practice, talk to you next week! =)

My name is Alicia Grenier, and I’m a sophomore at Pine Manor. I’ve been on campus since August 16 for RA (resident assistant) training. This past Monday my soccer team started preseason. I’m a striker on the team, and I was really excited to see all the new faces that were joining. I knew that with RA training and preseason, this week was going to be tiring and hectic.

Monday morning at 7 my alarm on my phone went off telling me to get up and get ready for our first preseason practice. Morning practice is mainly focused on conditioning and skills. There was a lot of hard work on the field, and I was pretty excited to see all the newcomers holding their own and really pushing themselves. Throughout the week I had to leave practice a few minutes early to get to RA training. There I had to fill up a bulletin board of things my first-year students could do while living in Boston, and I also had to make door tags for all my residents’ doors. My entire week was preparing me for Thursday, when the freshman finally moved onto campus. Now that it’s over, I’ve never been so tired before in my entire life.

The soccer program is quickly building. Last year was the first time that there was recruiting for soccer, and I was one of those recruits, along with eight others. This year soccer had eleven recruits – eleven! I was so excited when I saw how many people showed up to the first practice. I am looking forward to a great season with a great group of girls.

Well, I’m off to another orientation session, so I’ll talk to you next week!
