Information
- The College
- Pine Manor College (PMC) is a small private
four-year liberal arts college preparing women for roles of inclusive
leadership and social responsibility.
- Accreditation
- PMC is accredited by the New
England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
- Mission
- Pine Manor College prepares women for inclusive
leadership and social responsibility in their workplaces, families
and communities. We pursue this goal through: integration of an outcomes-based
curriculum and co-curriculum demonstrated by portfolio
presentations; active, collaborative,
applied
liberal arts learning; and college-wide mentoring teams and community
partnerships --in an environment that celebrates diversity and
respects the common good.
- History
- PMC was founded in 1911 by Helen
Temple Cooke, originally as a post-secondary division of Dana Hall School
in Wellesley. It was chartered in 1930 as an independent junior college
and authorized in 1959 to confer Associate's degrees. The College moved
to its present campus in 1965 and was authorized to confer Bachelor's
degrees in 1977.

- Dr. Gloria Nemerowicz has been
President of Pine Manor College since 1996.
- Campus and Location
- PMC's picturesque campus is
situated on 60 wooded acres in the Chestnut Hill section of Brookline,
Massachusetts, five miles from downtown Boston.
The college is accessible by
both automobile and public transportation. The campus is located just
off Route 9 and is a ten-minute walk to the Chestnut
Hill station on the Green
Line of the "T", Boston's trolley and subway system. The
college provides regular
shuttle
service to the train station when classes are in session.

- Student Enrollment
- For the Fall 2006 semester, 491 students came to Pine Manor College
from 26 states, the District of Columbia, and 18 countries
outside of the United States. 30% of U.S. students at PMC are from
out-of-state. International students account for 6.5% of the total student
population. 206 new students enrolled in the fall, including 168 first-year
students and 38 transfers. Approximately 20 new students typically
enroll at PMC during the Spring Semester.
- Campus Diversity
- For the Fall 2006 semester, PMC students identified themselves according
to the following racial/ethnic classifications: 17.6% White/Caucasian;
34.5% Black/Non-Hispanic; 9.8% Hispanic/Latina/Chicana; 6.5% International;
5.3% Cape Verdean; 4.5% Asian American; 6.5% Haitian; 3.7% Puerto
Rican; 0.6% American Indian; 11.3% Other or Unreported. For the fourth
consecutive year, PMC ranks #1 among liberal arts colleges (bachelors)
in the United States for campus
diversity according to U.S. News' 2007x America's Best Colleges.
- Admission Requirements
- Pine Manor College reviews applications
for admission on a rolling basis. First-year students are considered
for admission based on a complete review of a wide array of credentials,
including an official secondary school transcript, results from the
SAT I or ACT, school recommendations, and a personal essay. Transfer
applicants must submit the same credentials if they have completed
less than 24 college credits, but otherwise are considered for admission
based on a review of official college transcripts, college recommendations,
and a personal essay. International students are not required to submit
results from the SAT I or ACT, but must submit TOEFL scores. While
an interview is not normally required for admission, it is strongly
recommended for all applicants.
Pine Manor College admits students without regard to their race, color,
religion or creed, national or ethnic origin, age, handicap, veteran's
status, sexual orientation, or marital status.

- Outcomes-based learning,
interactive teaching, mentoring, and academic support provide individual
attention and opportunities for independent growth and leadership at
Pine Manor College. PMC's co-curricular
approach connects theory with practice through an innovative
leadership program, internship
placement, and extracurricular
activities.

- Pine Manor College offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, the Associate
in Arts (A.A.) degree, and the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree.

- 66 full and part-time faculty members teach
at Pine Manor College. 75% of full-time faculty hold the highest degree
in their field. 68% of full-time faculty are women. PMC student to faculty
ratio is 10:1.
- Academic Calendar
- PMC's academic calendar is
semester based, with the fall semester starting in September and ending
in December and the spring semester starting in January and ending in
May. Two optional summer sessions are also offered.
- Class Size
- 72% of PMC classes have fewer than 20 students, ranking
Pine Manor College among the top 40 liberal arts colleges (bachelor's)
in the United States in this area according to US News' 2005 America's
Best Colleges.

Student Life
- Co-curricular
- At PMC, what students do outside of the classroom is just as important
as what goes on inside the classroom. Co-curricular activities are encouraged
and are considered a vital part of each student's education and leadership
development. Opportunities to participate in community service, student
organizations, intercollegiate
athletics, performing arts, and recreational activities are widely
available to Pine Manor students and the college's proximity to Boston
greatly enhances the student experience.
- Student Government
- Students participate in decision making at Pine Manor College through
the Student Government Association. Student representatives sit on the
Curriculum Committee, Library Committee, Speakers and Programs Committee,
and the Academic Ethics Council.
- Athletics
- Athletics play an important
role at Pine Manor College, providing students opportunity to practice
inclusive leadership and social responsibility.
Intercollegiate
sports include cross country, soccer, tennis and volleyball in the
fall, basketball in the winter, and softball in the spring. PMC competes
against other NCAA Division III schools and is a member of the Great
Northeast Athletic Conference. PMC's varsity teams are the Gators.
- Athletic Facilities
- Athletic facilities at
PMC include a new outdoor tennis complex with six courts, softball and
soccer fields, a cross country trail, two platform tennis courts, and
a multi-purpose gymnasium with courts for indoor sports, a fitness room,
a dance studio, and a softball batting cage.
- International Student Services
- International students are well served by the International
Student Advisor and through participation in the International
Student Club.
- Residence Life
- 74% of students live in residence
halls on campus. Residential students live in one of three villages,
each with five residence halls and a Commons area. Each residence hall
accommodates 30 students.
- Technology Services
- All residence hall rooms are wired for high-speed internet access.
Additionally, students can access the Internet from computers available
throughout the campus in the residence hall common areas, the Campus
Center, and five computer laboratories. Students enjoy best-effort guidance
for their personal computers in residence hall rooms at no charge, and
assistance is available through technology mentoring. There are no technology
fees for students.
- Parking
- Ample parking exists
on campus for residential and commuter students. Parking permits are
available to students for an annual fee of $80 for resident students
and $40 for commuter students.

- The Student Life staff provides
a wide array of services to benefit the well-being of students, such
as advising and personal
counseling, healthcare
services, and awareness programs about current issues.
Financial Information
- Tuition, Room and Board
- PMC is among the most affordable
private four-year colleges in the United States. Tuition for the
2008-09 academic year is $18,957 and room and board is $11,115. Total
cost for resident students with fees is $30,322.
- Student Financial Aid
- At Pine Manor College education may be the best investment you ever make in your future. We commend our students for having the drive and commitment to seek their college degree. We are also dedicated to helping students and their families make sound financial decisions to pay for college. Generous contributions from alumnae and friends of the College enabled PMC to reduce tuition by 34% and offer financial assistance to students. - Endowment
- The college endowment is $13 million.
English Language Institute
- The English Language Institute (ELI),
an integral part of PMC, specializes in intensive English language courses
for both men and women. ELI was started by the College in 1996.
Center for Inclusive Leadership and Social Responsibility
- The Center for Inclusive Leadership
and Social Responsibility fosters leadership skills of young women
(from middle school age through college age), which are inclusive of
all people and are directed toward a common good. The Center is a hub
of activity for women of all ages and backgrounds -- reaching out to
the community while providing teaching and learning opportunities for
Pine Manor College students and faculty.
