History

In the B.A. Program in History, students explore the ways in which people create and are created by their histories and cultures. History and Art History are brought together in this interdisciplinary major that emphasizes the importance of understanding the ways in which the past informs present actions, ideas and creative expression. Focus is centered on the Americas in a global context. In particular, we turn a critical eye toward the intersection of past and present in order to interpret the construction and expression of identity for diverse groups and individuals, as well as the values and beliefs embodied in ideas, actions and interactions within and among diverse communities.

The major is designed to provide students with a broad base of knowledge and skills using a series of perspectives and methodologies from the fields of cultural, social, and art history. With a focus on human relations, race, ethnicity, and creative expression, students will analyze and interpret the ideas, events, people and artifacts that shape and define contemporary and historical cultures. The major prepares students with vital skills in critical thinking, historical knowledge, and oral and written communication expression that are important in interpreting issues and events in contemporary culture and society.

Students can choose to concentrate in:

  • History of Race and Ethnicity
  • Cultural History
  • Art History
