Education

The Teacher Licensure Program prepares students in Early Childhood Education (PreK–2), Elementary Education (1–6), Secondary Level Biology (8–12), Secondary Level English (8–12), and Visual Arts (5–12). The Pine Manor College Teacher Licensure Program meets the requirements of the Interstate Agreement on Licensure of Educational Personnel, which allows students licensed through this program to teach in other participating states. A complete list of these states is available from the Program Director.

The Teacher Licensure Program exemplifies the College’s commitment to both a broad liberal arts foundation and professional development. Since its inception, the program has required a liberal arts major in combination with numerous, intensive classroom teaching experiences in a variety of field placements, beginning with first-year field work in the campus lab school (Ann Pappajohn Vassiliou Child Study Center) and ending with full-semester student teaching in the senior year.

Students may satisfy the requirements for only one licensure prior to graduation. As licensure is issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and not by Pine Manor College, all changes in state and federal regulations apply to all students currently enrolled in the Teacher Licensure Program, regardless of their year of matriculation.

Students who plan to enter the program must meet with Associate Professor Mary Connor, Program Director, prior to enrolling in any Education coursework. Furthermore, all students in all Education programs must pass the Communication and Literacy subtests of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) by the end of their sophomore year and pass all test components before enrolling in the student teaching practicum .

The Program Director has registration materials and information about test dates and preparation. Applications for taking the MTEL are available outside the Program Director’s office.

Students must carefully plan the schedule of their testing, as the College recommends that each subtest be taken on a different day. Since there are currently fewer than ten program completers, no specific single assessment or summary data of scores on the MTEL will be officially reported for the 2002–2003 academic year.

Students seeking licensure in English, Visual Arts, or Biology should do so in conjunction with a major in that area. These students should make their intention to seek teacher licensure known to both their advisor and the Director of the Teacher Licensure Program no later than the first semester of their sophomore year.

Students seeking licensure in Early Childhood Education must be Psychology majors specializing in Child Development. This combination ensures that individuals involved in Early Childhood Education have a psychological foundation in principles, theories, and research data concerning young children. Students meet the standards established by the Massachusetts Department of Education for Teacher Licensure through satisfying the requirements of the Psychology major, the Child Development area of specialization, the requirements of the Education Program, and the Breadth of Knowledge Outcome requirements for this level of licensure.

Students seeking licensure in Elementary Education must major in Liberal Studies, meet the requirements of the Education Program, and take the required course work for their Outcome requirements. Due to the specific course work required, interested students are advised to declare their major as well as their participation in the Teacher Licensure Program no later than their first semester, sophomore year.

Students must complete all major requirements in Educational Studies, and those of an approved major. Students may not major exclusively in Educational Studies. Should a student choose to transfer from the program into the complementary major, she is held to distribution and concentration requirements for that major.

Once accepted into the program, each student is responsible for completing a Program of Study, and for acquiring approval by the Director of Teacher Licensure Program and the appropriate B.A. Coordinator. A student must obtain approval of her Program of Study before enrolling in relevant program courses. Any change in a student’s Program of Study must be approved by the Director of Teacher Licensure Program.

All pre-practicum courses must be completed prior to undertaking the practicum. Permission to take the practicum is conditional upon passing the MTEL, a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, and a GPA of at least 2.5 in Educational Studies, completion of the field-based, pre-practicum courses with a grade of “C” or better in each, and the recommendation of the Program Director. In order to be licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Education, all students are required to take and pass the MTEL at the level at which they are seeking certification. Further information about this test is available from the Director of the Program.
Upon successful completion of the program and after passing the MTEL, students are eligible for Initial Licensure, which is granted by the Massachusetts Department of Education. Workshops are available to support students who are taking the subtests of the MTEL.
