History

In the B.A. Program in History, students explore the ways in which people create and are created by their histories and cultures. History and Art History are brought together in this interdisciplinary major that emphasizes the importance of understanding the ways in which the past informs present actions, ideas and creative expression. Focus is centered on the Americas in a global context. In particular, we turn a critical eye toward the intersection of past and present in order to interpret the construction and expression of identity for diverse groups and individuals, as well as the values and beliefs embodied in ideas, actions and interactions within and among diverse communities.

The major is designed to provide students with a broad base of knowledge and skills using a series of perspectives and methodologies from the fields of cultural, social, and art history. With a focus on human relations, race, ethnicity, and creative expression, students will analyze and interpret the ideas, events, people and artifacts that shape and define contemporary and historical cultures. The major prepares students with vital skills in critical thinking, historical knowledge, and oral and written communication expression that are important in interpreting issues and events in contemporary culture and society.

The study of History and Art History is made vital and relevant through interactions outside the classroom. Service learning in our courses enables students to apply their knowledge, perspectives, and methodologies in projects serving the needs of Boston-area groups and organizations. Students also acquire invaluable experience through their internships at various cultural organizations and museums in and around Boston. The skills and cultural sensitivity that are developed through this major are appropriate for careers in historical and art museums, public history organizations, education, journalism, and law. With a degree in History, our graduates approach the world with an understanding of how people and communities interact with one another and express their cultural distinctiveness, the ability to think critically and to communicate ideas and solutions, and to provide leadership in an increasingly complex world.
