Mathematics

The workplace of today and tomorrow requires that all college graduates have a fundamental understanding of basic mathematical concepts and operations. It is also essential that employees utilize problem-solving skills on a daily basis.

To assist students in their preparation for entry into the workplace and/or postgraduate education, Pine Manor College requires that all students complete the College’s mathematics competency requirement. This is done as follows: first, all students take the mathematics placement test. The competency requirement may then be met in one of three ways:

  1. 1. A student’s placement test score may indicate that she already possesses the skills the College feels are necessary to satisfy the competency requirement;
  2. A student’s score may indicate that she needs to review certain mathematical concepts, and she is then advised to take MA 101 (Living Mathematics), and/or MA 102 (Pre-algebra). Note: Successful completion of MA 102 fulfills the competency requirement; students who place below the MA 101 level are required to meet with a member of the Mathematics faculty who will design an individualized program of study for that student. Upon completion, the student will then continue to MA 101 and MA 102.
  3. A student may elect to transfer appropriate-level math courses from another college (please consult with the Mathematics faculty).
    After completion of the mathematics competency requirement, students are welcome to take any additional elective math courses.
