CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Albertus Magnus College senior Bianca Brown (West Haven, CT) recorded a double-double, scoring a game-high 26 points and 18 rebounds to lead the visiting Falcons to a 78-75 victory over Pine Manor College during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on Saturday, January 28 at Brunelli Court in Chestnut Hill, MA. Pine Manor drops to 7-9 (1-5 GNAC) with the loss, while Albertus is now 11-8 (4-4 GNAC) following the contest.
Brown was one of three Albertus players to finish with 20 or more points, along with sophomore guards Lianna Carrero (Hamden, CT), 21 points, and Lindsay Karle (Wllingford, CT), 22 points. All three players scored in double-figures during the first-half to help Albertus get out to a 37-28 halftime advantage. For Pine Manor, the halftime deficit was their largest of the first-half, as Brown hit a jumper with seconds remaining to give the Falcons the nine point advantage.
In the second-half, the Albertus lead grew to as many as 16 points following a three-pointer by Karle with 14:22 remaining and again at the 12:54 mark, following a jumper by Brown that made the score 53-37 in favor of the Falcons. Albertus maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second-half, with Pine Manor unable to get any closer than an eight-point deficit, until freshmen Natasia Franklin (Windsor, CT) hit a lay-up with just over a minute to play to make the score 72-66. Franklin scored 10 of her 14 points in the second-half, finishing as one of four Gators in double-figures.
Following Franklin’s basket, a pair of free-throws by Karle put Albertus back ahead by eight. Another Pine Manor lay-up, this time by senior Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA) cut the deficit back to six points, 74-68, with 43 seconds remaining. Following a turnover by Brown, Pine Manor sophomore Ashley Carusone (Nashua, NH) was fouled while making a basket, cutting the Albertus lead to three points with just 33 seconds remaining.
The next possession, Carrero then calmly hit a pair of free-throws to extend the Albertus lead to five, at 76-71. With under-30 seconds remaining, Franklin raced down the floor, converting a lay-up for PMC to once again make it a one-possession game. However, Pine Manor had difficulty stopping the clock on the ensuing possession as Carrero once again hit a pair of free-throws to put the Falcons ahead, 78-73— this time with only nine seconds to go. Pine Manor senior Phibe Pham (Boston, MA) then hit a running shot with three seconds to play, cutting the score to 78-75, but Albertus was able to safely inbound the ball, allowing time to expire and the Falcons to take the 78-75 victory.
Dumeran finished with a team-high 20 points for Pine Manor, scoring 14 in the second-half to help the Gators stay within reach of Albertus. Franklin and Dumeran were joined in double-figures by senior Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD), 16 points, and Jessica Gilmore (Dorchester, MA), 10 points. Gilmore finished with a double-digit point output off the bench for the third consecutive game.
Albertus Magnus will next play on Wednesday, February 1, when they travel back to Boston to take on Simmons College. Pine Manor will have a quick turnaround as it will travel to West Hartford, CT on Monday for a 7:00 p.m. GNAC contest versus Saint Joseph College.
