CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor College women’s basketball dropped its first game of the season,100-89, on Monday evening to visiting Albertus Magnus College at Brunelli Court. Pine Manor falls to 6-1 overall with the setback while Albertus Magnus improves to 2-2 on the season.
Four Albertus Magnus seniors paved the way for the Falcons, led by Liana Carrero’s (Hamden, Conn.) game-high 28 points. In addition, Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) recorded a double-double of 22 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, while Nicole Acerra (East Haven, Conn.) added 16 points. Albertus senior Lindsay Karle (Wallingford, Conn.) finished with 19 points, shooting 5-8 from beyond the arc—including a three-pointer at 12:41 of the first half that gave her 1,000 career points.
Pine Manor never led past the 6:03 mark of the first half despite a team-high 26 points from sophomore Ari DeJesus (Providence, R.I). DeJesus also collected 13 rebounds to finish alongside Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.), above, as one of two Gators with a double-double. Franklin finished the contest with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
In all, four Gators finished in double figures as DeJesus and Franklin were joined by Alexis Lee (Akron, Ohio), 21 points, and Jayva Johnson (West Haven, Conn.), who finished with 15 points. All of Lee’s points came from beyond the three-point line as the sophomore guard shot 7 of 14 from long range.
The Falcons used a 12-2 run late in the first half to distance themselves from the Gators. Carrero hit a three pointer with a minute remaining before the half to give Albertus Magnus the same 50-40 advantage that they would take into the break.
Albertus Magnus maintained the ten point cushion for most of the second half, leading by as many as 16 points with just less than five minutes to play. However, a pair of offsetting technical fouls with 3:39 remaining was followed by a 9-2 PMC run that helped Pine Manor close to within seven points, at 95-88, with 1:24 left in the contest.
With the Gators as close as they had been since the midway point of the second, Albertus Magnus countered by knocking down all five of their free throws in the final minute to take the 100-89 victory.
Albertus Magnus will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they host Drew at 7:00 PM. Pine Manor will also return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Hampshire College for a 7:00 PM tipoff.
