Providence, R.I. – Freshman Jayva Johnson (West Haven, Conn.) scored a game-high 17 points to lead Pine Manor College women's basketball to a 74-62 decision over Johnson & Wales University at the Wildcat Center on Tuesday evening.
The Gators had five players in double-figures and two double-doubles on the evening. SophomoreAri DeJesus (Providence, R.I.) had a double-double for PMC, scoring 16 points with 12 rebounds while sophomore Alexis Lee (Akron, Ohio) also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards in the victory.
Johnson & Wales was led by junior Jenna Juron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) with 13 points, five assists and four rebounds while freshman Bobbie Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.)narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds in the setback. Junior Valerie Arce (Providence, R.I.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and six rebounds for the Wildcats.
Both squads traded baskets early with JWU trailing by just five points (17-12) after a jumper by Arce with 11:37 left in the first half. The Wildcats held it to five points on several occasions, including 28-23 with less than five minutes remaining. The visiting Gators closed out the half on a 16-6 run to take the 44-31 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime. JWU shot 46.9% (15-or-32) from the field for the stanza while Pine Manor hit for a 50.0% clip (16-of-32). Pine Manor had the 12-10 advantage on the glass and held the Wildcats scoreless from the free throw line.
Johnson & Wales clawed their way back throughout the second half and cut the lead to just one point on a free throw by juniorNatalie DiCocco (Media, Pa.), making the score 51-50 with 6:49 left in the contest. The Gators responded, however and used an 11-1 run over the next two minutes to regain the double-digit lead, 62-51 on a three-pointer by freshmanMaria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan)with just under five minutes remaining. Pine Manor then held on for the 74-62 victory.
With the setback Johnson & Wales drops to 6-14 for the year while Pine Manor improves to 16-3 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, February 6thwhen they travel to Anna Maria for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at 7:00 p.m.
