LYNN, Mass. -- Behind a game-high 22 points from freshman Jenn Colpitts, the University of Maine at Fort Kent used a second half rally to defeat Pine Manor, 61-56, on Saturday December 12 at the Fisher College Holiday Hoops Classic.
The teams exchanged baskets throughout a tight first half. The early going saw Pine Manor establish a strong inside presence thanks largely to the tremendous efforts of junior Therline Dumeran (pictured left) (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Ringe). Dumeran collected 13 of her game high 22 rebounds in the first half, and contributed a team-high 18 points en route to a double-double on the game. She was one of three Pine Manor starters to score in double figures along with senior Enjolee Phillips (Hartford, CT/Weaver), 10 points, and sophomore Tia Nelson (Rockport, MA/Rockport) 13 points. The Gators controlled the paint throughout the contest, amassing 49 rebounds and establishing a 17-8 edge on the offensive glass. Senior Jataiya Alexander (Dorchester, MA/English) also had double digit rebounds as she finished with 12 boards for Pine Manor.
However, despite strong contributions front the Gator starting five and a 25-23 advantage at the half, Pine Manor had difficulty containing Culpitts after the intermission. Fort-Kent used aggressive defense to fuel a transition game early in the second half and a series of steals by Culpitts and senior Amber Garrison helped the Bengals pull ahead, as Culpitts scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half. While Fort-Kent would pull ahead of the Gators they were unable to put away Pine Manor until the waning moments of the game. A steal and a quick lay-up by Phillips with under a minute to remain pulled Pine Manor back to within two at 58-56, but inconsistent foul shooting by the Gators would ultimately help the Bengals hold on for the win. Junior Megan Land added 10 second half points for Fort-Kent as the Bengals picked up their first win of the 2010-11 season. With the loss Pine Manor drops to 2-5 overall early in the 2010-11 season.
The Gators will return to Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium in Lynn, MA for the final day of the Holiday Hoops Classic tomorrow, Sunday December 12. Pine Manor will take on host Fisher College at 3:00 p.m. to close out the first half of its 2010-2011 schedule before heading into semester break.
