Northfield, Vermont -- Norwich senior Christine Daniels (Concord, NH/Concord) led all players with 19 points and 15 rebounds as Norwich University cruised to an 81-50 victory over Pine Manor College on Saturday, January 29, in Northfield, VT. Pine Manor junior Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) recorded a double-double of her own, scoing 11 points and collecting 14 rebounds for the Gators, who drop to 2-5 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play and 5-12 overall. Norwich moves to 13-5 on the season, and 5-1 in the GNAC.
Nowich raced out to an early 10-2 lead to start the game, before Pine Manor would rally with a 9-1 run to tie the score at 11-all at the 12:16 mark of the first half. However, Norwich would respond, once again finding its strid and going on a 10-0 run to jump ahead of the Gators 21-11at the mid-point of the first, following a three-pointer by sophomore Andrea Vogt (Dedham,MA/Dedham). Vogt would finish with 12 points, as she joined Daniels in double-figures for the Cadets, who also recieved scoring contributions from 13 different players on the day.
With the score at 21-11, the two teams would trade baskets before the Cadets were able to distance themselves from the Gators. Pine Manor got within 5 points, 25-20, with just over five minutes remaing in the first, before Norwich closed out the half with an impressive 15-2 run-- taking a 40-22 lead in to the locker room at half-time.
In the second-half, Norwich was able to pull away, just as they had done at the end of the first. The Cadets shot over 50% after the half, increasing the Gators deficit throughout the second-half while establishing leads as big as 34 points en route to the 81-50 final. Juniors Phibe Pham (Boston,MA/Snowden) and Therline Dumeran (Cambridge,MA/Cambridge), and sophomore Tia Nelson (Rockport,MA/Rockport) each had 8 points for Pine Manor, who shot just 30% in the game.
Pine Manor will return home for its next game on Wednesday, February 2, to take on the Monks of St. Joseph's College of Maine (12-6, 4-1 GNAC). The game is at 7:00 p.m.
