Chicago Citation Style

Chicago Manual of Style

This guide has been adapted from examples provided in the 15th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style and A Short Guide to Writing About Art by Sylvan Barnet.  These are the styles used most often in art research.  However, bibliographic citation guides do vary; always check with your professor as to style preference.

Books

One author:

Patton, Sharon F. African-American Art.  Oxford History of Art.  Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1998.

Two or three authors:

Janson, H.W., and Anthony F. Janson.  History of Art.  New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 2001.

Part of a book (such as an essay or article in a collection):

Note: For journals in which each issue begins on page one, include both the volume and issue number; for journals using continuous pagination, the issue number is not necessary.
