Chestnut Hill, Mass.-- Pine Manor College junior Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) has been named the 2010-11 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Defensive Player of the Year. Dumeran led the conference in both steals (4.2 per game) and blocked shots (3.1 per game), while averaging a double-double, 14.2 points per game and 12.7 rebounds per game, this season.
The junior from Cambridge, MA was also named to a spot on the GNAC All-Conference Second Team, as her 14.2 point per game average ranked in the top ten in the conference and her rebounding total was good for second in the conference— trailing only Norwich’s Christine Daniels, The 2010-11 GNAC Player of the Year.
“We couldn’t be happier for [Therline],” said Gator Head Coach Alex Gould. “It’s awesome, she had a tremendous season for us and we are glad she received this kind of recognition.”
Dumeran is the first Pine Manor player to win GNAC Defensive Player of the Year and the first Pine Manor player to be named GNAC All-Conference since 2008, when Laura Cecil was named Second Team All-Conference.
Dumeran opened the season by recording her first of 13 double-doubles, when she totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds, along with 2 blocks and 5 steals, in a Pine Manor loss at Curry on November 15, 2010. Dumeran would then move on to score 12 points, grab 18 boards, 2 blocks and 4 steals in a loss at MIT. She would then score a game high 19 points as the Gators defeated Bay Path for their first win of the season on November 29, 2010. Dumeran’s defensive prowess was on display against Bay Path as she recorded a game-high 8 steals while hauling in 21 of Pine Manor’s 51 rebounds in the contest.
As the season progressed, Dumeran would continue her strong play for the Gators, turning in perhaps her best individual performance of the entire season when she recorded a triple-double on December 8, 2010 at Anna Maria College. Dumeran would score 14 points, grab 17 rebounds and total a staggering 11 blocks in the first game of an impressive week for the junior.
Later that week, the Gators would travel to Lynn, MA for a pair of games at the Fisher College Holiday Hoops Classic. Pine Manor’s All-Conference forward was dominant throughout the weekend, as she scored 18, had 22 boards, 2 blocks and 3 steals in a narrow defeat to Maine-Fort Kent before recording 17 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks and 7 steals as the Gators closed out the first semester with 64-36 victory over host Fisher College.
Dumeran would return from semester break and turn in another impressive performance, coming within 2 rebounds of recording her second triple-double of the season on January 5, 2011 vs. Wheelock. In the game, she scored 24 points and 8 rebounds, to go along with 12 steals and 4 blocks for the Gators.
While Pine Manor would drop the first two games of the conference season, the Gators would rebound to defeat Johnson & Wales on Saturday January 15, 2011. Led by Dumeran’s game-high 24 points, 21 rebounds, 5 blocks and 3 steals, the Gators defeated the Wildcats, 74-65.
Dumeran would then score 12 points to go with 17 rebounds, 3 blocks and 6 steals in a loss at Simmons before turning in arguably her best GNAC performance of the season against Albertus Magnus on January 22, 2011. In a Saturday afternoon against the Falcons, Dumeran scored a game-high 25 points and added a game-high 22 boards, to go along with 4 blocks and 6 steals as the Gators secured a 69-67 road victory.
Dumeran would continue on through the conference season, recording double-doubles against Emerson on January 27 and Mount Ida against February 15, 2011 while recording 14 rebounds, 2 blocks and 7 steals to help the Gators defeat Lasell, 66-48, on February 8, 2011.
Pine Manor Junior guard Phibe Pham (Boston, MA/Snowden International) was also named to the 2011 GNAC Sportsmanship Team. For a complete list of GNAC All-Conference Honorees, click here.
