Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Emerson used a strong second-half to break a 31-all halftime score en route to a 75-63 victory over Pine Manor on Thursday January 27, 2011 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game at Pine Manor Gymnasium in Chestnut Hill, MA. Pine Manor and Emerson played to a 31-all halftime score, before the Lions put themselves in front to stay early in the second half.
The Gators raced out to an early 7-0 lead, as junior Ashley Reeves knocked down a three-point shot just under-3 minutes into the game. However, Emerson would have an answer to the Gators early run, as they stormed back with a 14-0 run to take a 14-7 lead with 13:23 remaining in the first. Emerson would stretch its first half lead to 31-17 before Pine Manor used a furious rally to tie the game at the half.
A pair of three pointers by sophomore Tia Nelson (Rockport, MA/Rockport) and a pair of free throws by junior Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge) brought Pine Manor even with Emerson, 31-31, at the end of the first. Dumeran once again notched a double-double for the Gators, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Nelson scored 9 points and played every minute of the game for the Gators.
In just her third game of the season, Pine Manor junior Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) recorded her second double-double, leading the Gators with 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds of her own. Wright would hit a lay-up to give Pine Manor an early second-half lead at 33-31, and would then knock down two free-throws to help the Gators to a 35-33 lead following a quick answer by Emerson’s Olivia Connors (Windham,NH/Salem) that saw the game tied at 33.
However, Emerson would break the 35-all deadlock to take the lead for good just over 3 minutes in to the second-half. While the Lions would pull ahead, they were never able to put away the Gators until late. Emerson held leads of as big as seven, but with just over four minutes remaining Pine Manor found itself within four, trailing 57-61.
From that point, Emerson was able to run away from the Gators, stretching the lead to 73-59 thanks to a lay-up by senior Kathy Andrade (Hull,MA/Hull) up with just 1:42 remaining. Andrade led all scorers on the evening with 26 points, while also recording a double-double thanks to a game high 16 rebounds. Sophomore Olivia DiNucci (Pittsburgh,PA/Shaler Area) also had 22 for the Lions.
Emerson improves to 4-1 in the GNAC and 6-12 overall while the Gators drop to 2-4 in conference play and 5-11 on the season. Pine Manor will now look to Saturday, January 29, 2011 and a 3:00 p.m. tip-off at Norwich (11-5, 4-1 GNAC).
