EN 112: World Literature: Genres and Themes. Prof. Aguero.
Introduces students to the basic elements of poetry, fiction, drama, and nonfiction while exploring important works of world literature. Students will analyze how literary works from throughout the world and a variety of cultures reflect individual and social concerns. No prerequisite.

EN 111 or EN 112 is required for English majors. Both are required for students who want to be licensed as teachers with an English major.

EN 206: Creative Writing. Prof. Aguero.
Create your own portfolio of fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction as you develop your ability to write with the help of a professional writer. Students currently enrolled in College Composition who are interested in taking this course should seek permission from Prof. Aguero.

EN 213: Editing Practicum. One Credit. Prof. Kreilkamp.
In this course students interested in literature or publishing participate in the production of an international Irish Studies journal. Permission of the instructor.

EN 216, Shakespeare I. Prof. Emma Dassori.
This course examines a variety of Shakespeare's plays including comedies, tragedies, histories, and one tragicomedy other than those studied in EN 217. Either EN 216 or EN 217 is required for English majors. No prerequisite.

EN 232: American Writers: Faith, Race and Gender. Prof. Ponder.
We will look at how American authors, women and men, black and white, wrote innovative fiction, poetry and essays that challenged 19th century America. Writers include Nathaniel Hawthorne, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Mark Twain. Required for English majors. No prerequisite.

EN 233: African-American and Caribbean Literature. Prof. Ponder.
We will look at how pairs of writers (Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs; Richard Wright and Zora Neale Hurston; Alice Walker and Edwidge Dandicat) have portrayed slavery, exile, and racism in literature which raises issues of gender as well as race. Prerequisite: CC 112 or permission.

Required

Any literature course.
