The College

Pine Manor College (PMC) is a small, private four-year liberal arts college preparing women for roles of inclusive leadership and social responsibility.

PMC is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Mission

Pine Manor College prepares women for inclusive leadership and social responsibility in their workplaces, families, and communities. We pursue this goal through integration of an outcomes-based curriculum and co-curriculum demonstrated by portfolio presentations; active, collaborative, and applied liberal arts learning; and college-wide mentoring teams and community partnerships in an environment that celebrates diversity and respects the common good.

History

PMC was founded in 1911 by Helen Temple Cooke, originally as a post-secondary division of Dana Hall School in Wellesley. It was chartered in 1930 as an independent junior college and authorized in 1959 to confer Associate's degrees. The College moved to its present campus in 1965 and was authorized to confer Bachelor's degrees in 1977.

President

Dr. Gloria Nemerowicz has been President of Pine Manor College since 1996.

Campus and Location

PMC's picturesque campus is situated on 60 wooded acres in the Chestnut Hill section of Brookline, Massachusetts, five miles from downtown Boston. The College is accessible by both automobile and public transportation. The campus is located just off Route 9 and is a ten-minute walk to the Chestnut Hill Station of the D branch on the Green Line of the "T," Boston's trolley and subway system. The College provides regular shuttle service to and from the train station when classes are in session.

Enrollment

Student Enrollment

For the Fall 2009 semester, 452 undergraduate and 34 graduates students came to Pine Manor College from 26 states, the District of Columbia, and 18 countries outside of the United States. Approximately 19% of PMC undergraduate students are from out-of-state. International students account for 7% of the total undergraduate student population. 161 new undergraduate students enrolled in the fall, including 142 first-year students and 19 transfer students. Approximately 20 new students typically enroll at PMC during the Spring semester.

Campus Diversity

For the Fall 2009 semester, PMC undergraduate students identified themselves according to the following racial/ethnic classifications: 38.7% Black/African American; 13.9% Hispanic; 12.6% White/Caucasian; 6.9% International Students; 6.4% Cape Verdean; 5.5% Haitian; 3.5% Asian/Pacific Islander; 2.5% Puerto Rican; 0.4% American Indian/Native Alaskan; and 6.8% race unkown. Throughout the past several years, PMC has ranked among the most diverse campuses among liberal arts colleges in the United States, frequently ranking number one, according to U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges.

Admission Requirements

For undergraduate admissions, Pine Manor College review applications for admission on a rolling basis. First-year students are considered for admission based on a complete review of a wide array of credentials, including an official secondary school transcript, results from the SAT I or ACT, school recommendations, and a personal essay. Transfer applicants must submit the same credentials if they have completed less than 24 college credits, but otherwise are considered for admission based on a review of official college transcripts, college recommendations, and a personal essay. International students are not required to submit results from the SAT I or ACT, but must submit TOEFL scores. While an interview is not required for admission, it is strongly recommended for all applicants.

Learning Environment

Outcomes-based learning, interactive teaching, mentoring, and academic support provide individual attention and opportunities for independent growth and leadership at Pine Manor College. PMC's co-curricular approach connects theory with practice through and innovative leadership program, internship placement, and extracurricular activities.

Degrees Offered

Pine Manor College offers the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree, the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree, and the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree.

Sixty-six full and part-time faculty members teach at Pine Manor College. 75% of full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their field. 68% of full-time faculty are women. PMC student to faculty ratio is 10:1.

Academic Calendar

PMC's academic calendar is semester based, with the fall semester starting in September and ending in December and the spring semester starting in January and ending in May. Two optional summer sessions are also offered.

Student Life

Co-Curricular

At PMC, what students do outside of the classroom is just as important as what goes on inside the classroom. Co-curricular activities are encouraged and are considered a vital part of each student's education and leadership development. Opportunities to participate in community service, student organizations, intercollegiate athletics, performing arts, and recreational activities are widely available to Pine Manor students and the college's proximity to Boston greatly enhances the student experience.

Student Government

Students participate in decision making at Pine Manor College through the Student Government Association. Student representatives sit on the Curriculum Committee, Library Committee, Speakers and Programs Committee, and the Academic Ethics Council.

Athletics

Athletics play an important role at Pine Manor College, providing students opportunity to practice inclusive leadership and social responsibility. Intercollegiate sports include cross country, soccer, tennis and volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and softball in the spring. PMC competes against other NCAA Division III schools and is a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. PMC's varsity teams are the Gators.

Athletic Facilities

Athletic facilities at PMC include a new outdoor tennis complex with six courts, softball and soccer fields, a cross country trail, two platform tennis courts, and a multi-purpose gymnasium with courts for indoor sports, a fitness room, a dance studio, and a softball batting cage.

International Student Services

International students are well served by the International Student Advisor and through participation in the International Student Club.

Residence Life

74% of students live in residence halls on campus. Residential students live in one of three villages, each with five residence halls and a Commons area. Each residence hall accommodates 30 students. 

Technology Services

All residence hall rooms are wired for high-speed internet access. Additionally, students can access the Internet from computers available throughout the campus in the residence hall common areas, the Campus Center, and five computer laboratories. Students enjoy best-effort guidance for their personal computers in residence hall rooms at no charge, and assistance is available through technology mentoring. There are no technology fees for students. 

Parking

Ample parking exists on campus for residential and commuter students. Parking permits are available to students for an annual fee of $125 for resident students and $75 for commuter students.

The Student Life staff provides a wide array of services to benefit the well-being of students, such as advising and personal counseling, healthcare services, and awareness programs about current issues.

Tuition, Room & Board

Student Financial Aid

Generous contributions from alumnae and friends of the College enabled PMC to reduce tuition by 34% and offer financial assistance to students. The English Language Institute (ELI), an integral part of PMC, specializes in intensive English language courses for both men and women. ELI was started by the College in 1996.

Center for Inclusive Leadership and Social Responsibility

The Center for Inclusive Leadership and Social Responsibility fosters leadership skills of young women (from middle school age through college age), which are inclusive of all people and are directed toward a common good. The Center is a hub of activity for women of all ages and backgrounds — reaching out to the community while providing teaching and learning opportunities for Pine Manor College students and faculty.
