BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Pine Manor freshman Alexis Lee (Akron, OH), above left, scored a game-high 30 points, while classmate Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, NJ), above right, added an additional 13 points to lead the Gators to a 74-71 victory over neighboring Newbury College on Saturday afternoon at Pappas Gymnasium in Brookline, MA. With the win the Gators improve to 2-2 on the season. Newbury drops to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
Lee and Lynch finished as the only two Pine Manor players in double-figures in a contest that was tightly contested throughout. Lee was the story in the first half, helping Pine Manor to take a 29-24 advantage into the locker room at the break. Lee scored 16 of her 30 points in the first half, converting eight of ten from the free throw line while shooting 3-4 from the floor and knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
Newbury outscored the Gators in the second half, thanks in large part to Alex Pezzella's 18 second half points, Pezzella finished with a tea-high 22 points off the bench for the Nighthawks. However, the Gators were able to keep pace as Lee continued to get to the free throw line and add to the Pine Manor total. Lee finished 18-24 from the line. Newbury finished 21-40 as a team. Lynch added 11 of her 13 points in the second half to help PMC hang on for the 74-71 victory.
Newbury, who lost their second game in row by three-points, will look to regroup on Tuesday evening when they host Daniel Webster. Pine Manor will return to action on Monday night when they face Eastern Nazarene College at 6:00 PM in Quincy, MA.
