BUZZARDS BAY, MA – Pine Manor snapped its three-match winless streak in a big way Monday night with a 4-0 non-conference victory over Mass Maritime at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Leading scorers Beth Deegan and Alicia Grenier each cashed in on their fifth goals of the season, freshman Amanda Smalley scored her first goal as a Gator, and fellow frosh Colleen Tencza locked down her first career shutout, stopping six shots as Pine Manor moved to 2-3-1.
The Buccaneers nearly struck first, when Maritime’s Vanessa DiDomenico was met inside of 15 yards by a sliding Colleen Tencza, who smothered the ball in ruining the forward’s chance at a breakaway score at 20:28. After a pair of Pine Manor long-range attempts by sophomores Beth Deegan and Alicia Grenier were scooped by Bucs keeper Rachel Johnson, Tencza went upstairs to make a leaping catch on a Colleen Fissette hard shot at 25:15.
That was enough of a scare for Cory Kinsella’s club, which responded quickly and often.
Deegan took the ball from 30 yards out, streaked left and fired a shot above Johnson from inside 15 yards at 17:08, putting the Gators on the board with her fourth goal of the season.
After Grenier stole the ensuing Maritime kickoff in Bucs territory, the forward’s nifty flip to midfielder Amanda Smalley found the freshman cutting wide open across the middle for an easy loft over Johnson, giving the freshman her first career goal, and the Gators a 2-0 lead at 16:45.
Maritime’s only serious chance for the remainder of the half came when Tencza made a diving save on a Laura Spalt breakaway, sprawling to her right with two arms extended in pushing the shot outside the post with 14:25 remaining.
Seven minutes later, Grenier gave the Gators an insurance goal, beating Johnson over the top on a breakaway, taking any question out of a contest that was back and forth through 20 minutes.
After a quiet opening 30 minutes to the second half, a beautifully placed Grenier corner kick from the left corner found the 5-9 Deegan in front of the right post, and Deegan’s header found the back right corner of the net. Her second goal of the contest was her fifth of the season.
Pine Manor outshot the Bucs 21-11 and totaled six corner kicks to the Bucs five. The 4-0 win moves the Gators to 2-3-1 on the year, while Mass Maritime falls to 0-6. Both of Pine Manor’s wins have come by four or more goals, with the other being a 7-1 decision over Southern Vermont.
The Gators return to action Wednesday, returning to league action and playing host to Norwich at 4 p.m.
