Chestnut Hill, Mass.-- Despite 14 points from both junior guard Phibe Pham (Boston, MA/Snowden International) and junior forward Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough), Pine Manor dropped an 85-43 decision to visiting St. Joseph's College (ME) on Thursday night in Chestnut Hill. The Gators fall to 6-15 overall and 3-8 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. With the loss, Pine Manor is effectively eliminated from the race for the final spot in the GNAC playoffs.
Eleven different players scored for St. Joseph's College of Maine, led by 19 points from junior guard Ashley McDevitt (Cumberland,ME/Greely) as the Monks improved to 16-8 (8-3 GNAC) on the season. Freshmen Lindsay Moore (Somersworth,NH/Dover) also had 15 points, while classmate Abby Young contributed 13 points off the bench for the Monks.
Pine Manor took an early lead in the contest, as Wright and Pham hit shots to give the Gators a 4-0 led out of the gate. The Gators would hold the lead until the 15:41 mark of the first when St. Joe’s (ME) junior Ashley Geel (St. George, ME/Georges Valley) converted on a pair of free-throws to tie the score at 7-all. Less than a minute later, Geel would convert on one of two at the stripe to give the Monks the 8-7 lead. That was all that it would take for St. Joe’s, as the visitors would hold the lead for the rest of the game. Geel’s free-throws came as part of a 17-0 run by St. Joe’s (ME), helping the Monks to run out to a 20-7 lead just past the midway point of the first-half. St. Joe’s (ME) would continue to stretch its first half lead until eventually heading into the locker room with 45-23 halftime advantage.
After the half, the Monks would continue to impress, stretching the lead to as many as 47 points. The Monks held a 45-26 rebounding advantage, collecting 14 offensive boards while shooting just under 48% on the game. St. Joe’s dished out 15 assists on the night, while scoring 34 points in the paint, en route to the 85-43 victory.
For Pine Manor, senior Enjolee Phillips (Hartford, CT/Weaver) had 4 assists, while Wright and senior Jataiya Alexander (Hartford, CT/Weaver) both had a team-high 7 rebounds.
The Gators will host the final game of the 2010-11 regular season, this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Pine Manor Gymnasium, when they take on St. Joseph (CT). The contest will be the final game for seniors Enjolee Phillips and Jataiya Alexander. The Gators and Blue Jays will also take part in the WBCA Pink Zone initiative as part of the game. Pine Manor encourages fans to wear pink and to make a donation at the game in support of breast cancer research.
