Chestnut Hill, MA – Pine Manor dropped a 75-52 decision to visiting St. Joseph College (CT) on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Pine Manor Gymnasium in Chestnut Hill, MA. With the loss the Gators finish the 2010-11 season with a record of 6-16 overall and 3-9 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games. St. Joseph will now await its seed in the GNAC tournament as the Blue Jays finished the regular season by winning nine of their last ten games to finish at 18-6 (8-4 GNAC).
St. Joseph freshmen Mary Hyde (Derby, CT/Derby) had a game high 24 points on an efficient 9 of 14 day from the field. St. Joseph (CT) shot an impressive 47.5% on the game. Hyde was helped by senior Nathalie Mastarreno (Glastonbury,CT/East Catholic) who finished with 18 points and 5 assists and freshman Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, CT/Gilbert) who also finished in double-figures with 17 points, while dishing out a game-high 7 assists. Pine Manor sophomore Tia Nelson (Rockport, MA/Rockport), pictured left, had a team-high 18 points, all from beyond the arc. Nelson finished the game 6-9 from three-point range, but it wasn’t enough to rally Pine Manor past the Blue Jays.
St. Joseph (CT) used a big first half to distance itself from Pine Manor. After Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) scored on the first possession of the game for Pine Manor, St. Joseph (CT) went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead less than five minutes into the contest. The Gators would fight to close the gap in the following minutes but St. Joseph (CT) would continue to pull away. Following a three-pointer by Mastarreno at the midway point of the first, the Blue Jays would find themselves up 17, at 29-12. With Pine Manor unable to respond with a rally of its own, St. Joseph would enter the locker room with a 46-21 halftime advantage.
After the half, Pine Manor would rally, but the halftime deficit proved to be too great to overcome. Both teams would shoot just over 41% in the second-half, with Pine Manor outscoring St. Joseph 31-29 in the second session. In the second, Wright made strong contributions on both ends of the floor for the Gators, ultimately finishing the game with 13 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and a pair of steals. Despite the Gators second-half rally, the visitors would leave with a 75-52 victory.
Saturday’s game was also the last game for two Pine Manor players. Seniors Enjolee Phillips (Hartford, Ct/Weaver) and Jataiya Alexander (Hartford, CT/Weaver), pictured above with Gator Head Coach Alex Gould, were honored for the contributions they have made over the past four years in a pre-game ceremony.
Pine Manor also hosted the final GNAC WBCA Pink Zone® game of the week, as the Gators and Blue Jays both donned pink t-shirts and wristbands during the game to help raise breast cancer awareness. Pine Manor also collected donations in support of breast cancer research as part of the national initiative. For more information, click here.
