Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2
Boston, MA-- Pine Manor dropped both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to Emerson College on Friday afternoon at Rotch Field in Boston, MA. Emerson cruised to a 16-3 victory in game one before rallying to narrowly defeat Pine Manor 3-2 in game two. Game one belonged to Emerson. The home team scored 16 runs on 16 hits over four at-bats to bury the Gators 16-3. After the teams played a scoreless first inning, Emerson scored nine runs on six hits and three PMC errors to take a commanding 9-0 lead in the second inning. Emerson freshman Lissa Pappas (Prosper, TX/Prosper) delivered the biggest hit of the inning, launching a grand slam that would make the score 7-0 at the time.
With help from the long ball, Emerson would then score four more runs in the third inning. Emerson junior Kelsey Tuthill ( Middlefield, CT/Suffield) hit a three-run home-run as part of the four run inning that would make the score 11-0 in favor of Emerson. Tuthill finished game one going 3-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Emerson would score three more runs in the fourth before the GAtors got on the board in the fifth inning. Three consecutive singles from Tara Doehler (Lakeville, MA), Jess Kennedy (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet), and Michelle Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) helped the Gators get on the board, as Campbell drove home the first run of the game. Junior Kayla Nielsen (Saco, ME/Thornton Acadmey) would then reach on a fielder's choice that would allow the second Pine Manor run to score. Nielsen would then find her way to the plate when freshman Ashley Carusone singled up the middle. However, the Gator rally would not be enough as the Gators ell 16-3 in five innings.
Having put game one behind them, the Gators jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Kennedy led off the game with a double to right centerfield before coming around to score when freshman Macayla Kirylo (Pawtucket, RI/William E. Tolman Senior) reached base on a fielder's choice. With two runners in scoring position, Emerson starter Alex Magistro (Hackettstown, NJ/Blair) got Carusone to fly out to leftfield for the final out of the inning.
Michelle Campbell would then hold Emerson scoreless until the fifth inning, as the Gators clinged to a 1-0 lead. Emerson broke through in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits to pull ahead by the score of 3-1. An RBI single by senior Lynn Herman (Boca Raton, FL/St. Andrews) and a two-RBI single by junior Kendal Peiguss (Suquamish, WA/North Kitsap) helped give Emerosn the advantage.
The Gators immediately got one run back in the next inning, when Nielsen homered to left center. However, Pine Manor would get no closer as it would drop game two by the score of 3-2. Pine Manor drops to 8-14 in GNAC, but the Gators are still alive in the race for a spot in the GNAC tournament with two games remaining against Norwich on Monday.
