Gators drop pair at Norwich tri-match

NORTHFIELD, VT -- Pine Manor fell to 1-12 on the season after a pair of 3-0 setbacks to host Norwich and visiting Emmanuel in GNAC action at homecoming weekend in Northfield, VT Saturday afternoon.

In the early match, the Gators fell to the Cadets, 25-10, 25-10 and 25-9. Jen Gross and Alie Johnston led the Gators offensively with six kills and eight assists, respectively. Johnston added a pair of solo blocks.

The loss marked a second consecutive solid outing for middle hitter Aponi Washington. After totaling two blocks on Thursday at WPI, the 5-11 freshman anchored the defense again, with five blocks against Norwich.

Washington was yet a stalwart at the net versus Emmanuel, but to no avail, as the Gators lost 25-6, 25-14 and 25-12 in spite of four blocks for Washington.

Gross added three solo blocks and five kills. Freshman Laia Lopez-Best totaled a team-high eight digs, while classmate Susana Turcios followed with seven.

The losses drop Pine Manor to 0-7 in GNAC play. The Gators take a break from conference play, with four of the next five matches coming out-of-conference . Gross' Gators travel to Becker on Tuesday night at 7 and play host to Eastern Nazarine on Thursday at 7 p.m.
