BENNINGTON, Vt. – Pine Manor College Women’s Soccer dropped its 2012 season opener 6-0 to Southern Vermont College on Sunday afternoon at Everett Field in Bennington, VT.
Southern Vermont freshman Bridget Kelly (Lebanon, CT/Lyman Memorial) opened the scoring early for the Mountaineers, scoring her first collegiate goal just 2:44 into the first half. From that point, Southern Vermont would score four more first half goals before adding another in the second half to finish with the 6-0 victory.
Following the opening goal of the game, the Mountaineers continued to pressure the Gators’ backline, forcing PMC goalkeeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) to make three consecutive save to keep the score at 1-0. Finally, Southern Vermont was able to strike again when an errant deflection resulted in the ball going into the Pine Manor goal at the 10:23 mark of the first.
Just over 13 minutes later Southern Vermont junior Jocelyn Ortega (Chula Vista, CA/San Diego Mesa College) scored the first of her three consecutive goals to make the score 3-0, at the 23:32 mark of the first half. Under a minute later, Ortega then slotted home a goal on a feed from freshman Hannah Pease (Worthington, MA/Gateway Regional) before scoring with just under seven minutes remaining in the half to complete the natural hat-trick and give the Mountaineers a 5-0 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Pine Manor would hold Southern Vermont to just two shots on goal. However, SVC’s Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, VT/Hazen Union) would add another to the Mountaineers’ total with 13:52 remaining in the game. With the win, Southern Vermont moves to 2-0-0, winning for the second consecutive day following a 5-0 victory over Anna Maria on Saturday.
Pine Manor junior Amanda Powell (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) recorded the only shot of the game for Pine Manor, sending an effort late in the second half wide of the Southern Vermont goal. Kopystynsky finished the game with six saves, all of them coming in the first half.
Southern Vermont will look to continue its hot start on Wednesday when the Mountaineers will travel to Green Mountain College for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off. Pine Manor will also return to action on Wednesday, when they return home to Hedley Field to face the Daniel Webster College at 4:00 p.m.
