CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor seniors Phibe Pham (Boston, MA), Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA) and Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD) each scored 16 points but University of Maine at Fort Kent (11-12 overall) freshmen Ericka Christensen (Warren, ME) stole the show on Pine Manor’s Senior Day, scoring a game-high 26 points to lead the visiting Lady Bengals to a 72-65 victory over Pine Manor on Sunday, February 18 at Brunelli Court in Chestnut Hill, MA. With the loss Pine Manor ends its 2011-12 season with an overall record of 8-15 (2-11 GNAC).
Christensen finished with a double-double, collecting 14 rebounds while also shooting 12-14 from the free throw. However, it was Pine Manor that had the advantage in the rebounding department throughout the game, with Wright grabbing a game-high 23 and Dumeran securing 16 rebounds of her own as both players recorded double-doubles to give PMC a 64-50 advantage on the glass.
For UMFK, senior Megan Land (Salina, CA) finished with 18 points of her own, shooting 5-10 from three-point range in the process. Classmate Maliesha Caesar (Cayon, St. Kitts) also finished in double-figures for the Bengals with 14 points, while recording a double-double with 11 rebounds of her own.
Fort Kent built an early first-half advantage, taking a 19-9 lead at the midway point of the opening session. From there, Pine Manor worked to close the deficit, cutting the lead down to three points, at 22-12, following a pair of free-throws by Wright with 6:40 to play in the first. The teams then exchanged baskets over the next three-minutes of play before UMFK went on a mini-run to regain a nine-point advantage, at 32-23, when Christensen converted on a free-throw following an and-one play with 3:32 remaining. A bucket by Dumeran as the first half expired pulled Pine Manor to within four, at 33-29.
Fort Kent’s ten-point advantage in the first would be its largest lead until the closing seconds of the game, as the second-half was even tighter than the first. Fort Kent held on to a single-digit lead throughout the second, with Pine Manor unable to get any closer than a one-point deficit. Early in the second, Pham hit a jumper to make the score 36-35 in favor of Fort Kent, but the Gators would get no closer than two-points behind for the remainder of the contest. A pair of free-throws by freshmen Natasia Franklin (Windsor, CT) made the score 46-44 with 11:44 to play, while a three-pointer by Pham again cut the deficit, this time to 57-55, with 7:34 remaining.
Following, Pham’s three-pointer, the Bengals were finally able to distance themselves from the Gators, taking an 11-point advantage following a three-pointer from Land with only 1:58 left in the game. Another three-pointer from Pham and a jumper from Dumeran would draw the Gators to within seven-points but they would get no closer as UMFK captured the 72-65 victory.
