PROVIDENCE, RI -- Pine Manor fell short in its quest for its first win Wednesday night, falling to Johnson & Wales 67-45 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Harborside Recreation Center.
As the team has done often as of late, the Gators stumbled out of the gate. The Wildcats (7-9, 2-1 GNAC) jumped out to the early lead and opened their largest lead of the first half on a three-pointer by Allysen Dowen, taking a 22-8 advantage with 8:07 left in the period.
Pine Manor responded with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 24-17 on a jumper by junior guard Enjolee Phillips with 3:35 remaining in the half. That, however, was as close as the Gators would get, as the Wildcats took the 32-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Johnson & Wales forced 19 first half turnovers while holding Pine Manor to just 36% shooting from the field.
The Wildcats picked up in the second half where they left off in the first. TJ Ciolfi's club opened the period on a 14-5 run to take a 46-26 lead, never looking back.
For Pine Manor, forward Paulette Wright posted her best GNAC outing of the season. The sophomore led the Gators with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Phillips followed with 11 points and four rebounds.
Pine Manor returns to Chestnut Hill to take on Albertus Magnus on Saturday at noon.
