HOLYOKE, Mass. -- Pine Manor used a 20-0 first half run and received contributions from eight different players as they defeated Bay Path, 71-64, on Tuesday evening at the Bartley Center in Holyoke, MA.
The Gators trailed the Wildcats 14-9 at the 12:35 mark of the first half before rattling off 20 unanswered points to take a 29-14 advantage following a layup by Ashley Carusone (Nashua, NH) with 6:11 to go in the first. Carusone finished with seven points along with a game-high 16 rebounds for the Gators, who out-rebounded Bay Path 61-48 in the contest.
Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA) and Yiafia Dowridge (White Plains, NY) both finished in double figures for Pine Manor, scoring 16 and 11 points respectively. Dumeran also recorded 15 rebounds for her fifth-straight double-double of the season. Tia Nelson (Rockport, MA), Phibe Pham (Boston, MA), Phalonge Pierre (Boston, MA) and Jessica Gilmore (Cambridge, MA) each finished with 8 points.
With the Gators leading 29-14, Bay Path rallied back to close the gap to four points with just 28 seconds remaining in the first half following a three-pointer by Justine Hook (Berwick, PA). Hook finished with a game-high 22 points for the Wildcats and was one of four Bay Path players to finish in double-figures.
With the lead down to four, Pine Manor responded with a three-pointer by Nelson and a jumper by Gilmore to take a 38-29 lead into halftime.
Pine Manor continued to lead by as many as 14 points five minutes into the second half but the Gators were unable to put away the Wildcats as Bay Path continued to chip away. The Wildcats closed the gap back to nine points at both the 10:18 and 7:53 marks of the second-half before going on a run to cut the Pine Manor lead to a single point, as Hook concluded a 9-0 run with a three-pointer with 5:29 remaining.
From that point forward, Pine Manor did not allow another Bay Path field goal. The Gators held the Wildcats scoreless from the field for the remaining five and half minutes en route to a 71-64 victory.
Pine Manor will return to action this Sunday when the Gators host Maine-Presque Isle at Brunelli Court in Chestnut Hill, MA at 1:00 p.m.
