CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Pine Manor topped Becker College 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-21) as the Gators rallied from behind to capture the final two sets of an exciting match on Thursday, October 7. With the victory, Pine Manor moves its record back to .500 at 6-6 while Becker College falls to 5-12 on the season.
In each set, Pine Manor managed to distance itself from Becker at just the right time. With the first set deadlocked at 21-21, the Gators tallied the final points to take the set, 25-21, thanks to a balanced offensive attack. Pine Manor was led by sophomore Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB/River East Collegiate) who had a match-high 14 kills in the victory, as well junior Jennifer Gross (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Glades) and freshman Ashley Carusone (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) each of whom totaled 8 kills.
In the second set, Pine Manor would find itself behind 21-19, before going on a run to close out the set once again, 25-21. The Gators strong defensive play at the net was a constant factor all night, helping Pine Manor to secure the second set and ultimately the match. Gross contributed 8 total blocks, while sophomore Aponi Washington (Brockton, MA/Brockton) and freshman Imara Jackson (Malden, MA/Mystic Valley Charter) each contributed 6.
Despite allowing the Gators to rally past them in the first two sets, Becker seemed unwilling to let Pine Manor close out the match, as the Hawks raced out to an early lead. However, with Jackson serving Pine Manor would rally to defeat Becker with a string of 8 straight points. Jackson would finish the match leading Pine Manor with 4 service aces, followed closely by classmate Megan Patch who finished the night with 3 service aces and 6 set assists.
"We did a nice job tonight," said Head Coach Mike Murphy following the match. "The way we came back to get that third set– that is how you finish a game."
Pine Manor returns to Great Northeast Athletics Conference (GNAC) play this weekend as the Gators will host Rivier College (10-8, 4-0 GNAC) and Simmons College (2-12, 0-3 GNAC) on Saturday October 9. Pine Manor will take on Rivier at 12:00 noon, following that match Rivier will take on Simmons, and in the final match of the day Pine Manor will return to battle Simmons at 4:00 pm.
