Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2
East Providence, RI -- Pine Manor split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Johnson & Wales University (JWU) on Sunday April 3, 2011 at Pierce Field in East Providence, RI. In the first game, the Gators defeat JWU 2-1 before narrowly dropping the second game, 1-0. Pine Manor junior pitcher Tara Doehler (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet) went the distance in both games, surrendering only two runs over 13 innings.
In the first game, JWU took an early lead when junior Korissa Bailey (Pelham, NH/Pelham) hit her first home run of the season, leading off the bottom of the first inning with a shot to left field to give the Wildcats the 1-0 advantage.
JWU would hold the lead until the third inning when the Gators would rally to tie the score at one. PMC sophomore Flavia Vincente (Roxbury, MA/Jeremiah E. Burke) led off the top of the third with a single down the left field line. After the Gators failed to advance Vincente on two bunt attempts, the speedy outfielder found her way to second thanks to a wild pitch by JWU starter Alyssa Babineau (Princeton, MA/Monty Tech) before advancing to third on a passed ball. With Vincente now on third, an error by JWU allowed Vincente to score, tying the game at 1-1.
In the next inning, Pine Manor freshman Macayla Kirylo (Pawtucket, RI/William E. Tolman Sr.) hit a single to center field before sophomore Kaylyn Delgado (Worcester, MA/Bartlett) smacked a triple to drive home Kirylo and give the Gators the 2-1 advantage.
That was all the run support that Doehler would need as PMC's junior pitcher would set down the Wildcats in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before striking out the final batter of the game, with two on and two out, in the bottom of the seventh.
In game two, Bailey smacked a triple to lead off the home half of the first for JWU. With Bailey on first, JWU sophomore Ellis Kim (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) reached on a Pine Manor error that also allowed Bailey to score.
From that point on, JWU freshman Taylor Cwalinski would hold the Gators without a hit until the top of the seventh when Kirylo would lead off the inning with a single. Delgado would then advance Kirylo to second on an infield ground ball. With one on and one out, PMC senior Michelle Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) struck out but the ball would get away, forcing a throw to first to secure the out on Campbell while allowing Kirylo to advance to third. With the tying run on third, Cwalinski struck out PMC junior Jen Gross (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Glades) to end the threat and the game.
The Gators now sit at 3-1 in GNAC play (3-8 overall) and will play host to Norwich University on Tuesday, April 5 at 3:00 p.m. at Pine Manor Field in Chestnut Hill, MA.
