CHESTNUT HILL, MA – After Pine Manor took Game 2, Eastern Nazarine (4-16) came back to make quick work of the Gators (1-14) in the last two sets of a 3-1 win in non-conference women’s volleyball action Thursday night.
Back-to-back kills from Pine Manor’s Veronica Vozzolo (Bellmore, NY/JFK) and Jen Gross (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Glades) tied the opening set 6-6. Eastern Nazarine responded, as an Amber Burns (Fall River, MA/BMC Durfee) block broke an 11-11 tie as a part of a Lions 4-0 run during which the visitors took a 14-12 lead. A Gross block got the Gators to within three, at 24-21, but Bethany Greenfield’s (Parsippany, NJ, Parsippany) setter’s dump clinched game point in a 25-22 win.
Game 2 started sluggishly for the Gators, as the Lions got off to a 9-2 lead, but the set would ultimately belong to freshman Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB/River East). One of Johnston’s seven kills cut the deficit to 12-9, but the freshman was just getting started in igniting a furious Pine Manor comeback.
Trailing 23-17, a Johnston kill got the Gators to within five. Then, with the score 24-21, consecutive Johnston kills cut the margin to one before a Lions error tied the set, 24-24. After both teams exchanged leads, a game again was again decided by a Greenfield attack, but this time her kill error gave the Gators a 29-27 victory.
The wake-up call was all Mike Johnston’s club needed, as the Lions rolled through the final two sets, opening up an 8-2 lead to start Game 3. A Laura Cline (Fitchburg, MA/Twin City) kill put the Lions ahead 16-6, and the visitors led for double figures the remainder of the way, cruising to a 25-13 victory.
Game 4 was nip-and-tuck early on, with back-to-back kills from freshman Aponi Washington (Brockton, MA/Brockton) breaking an 8-8 tie. The Gators went ahead 12-8, but the Lions responded immediately and effectively. An 8-0 run with libero Jordan Hobson (Chester, VA/Matoaco) at serve to go up 16-12 took the wind out of Pine Manor’s sails in what ended as a 25-14 win for the visitors.
Johnston and Vozzolo led Pine Manor with seven kills each, while Vozzolo added a team-high 12 digs.
The Gators have a week off before returning to action October 15, playing host to Daniel Webster in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
