BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Pine Manor improved to 2-1 in the Mike Murphy era with an easy 3-0 road win over Mass Maritime, 25-6, 25-14 and 25-12 at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.
Sophomore Alie Johnston (left) led Pine Manor with six kills, eight digs and a career- and match-best 12 service aces, as the Gators won on the road for the first time under Murphy and the first time overall since October 12, 2008.
Possibly the story of the Gators hot start is the standout play of its freshman cast. First-year setter Megan Patch continued her stellar play, handing out 11 assists to go along with seven digs. Fellow frosh Imara Jackson threw down five blocks and six service aces, and Ashley Carusone added five kills and nine digs.
Freshman Kelly Lyons notched three kills, six digs and a pair of service aces in the setback for the Buccaneers, which fell to 0-7. Mass Maritime also received three kills and three digs each from senior Victoria Presutti and sophomore Suzanne Marino.
Through three matches, the Pine Manor has already bested its win total from all of 2009. The Gators improved to 2-0 over the last two seasons against Mass Maritime, which will see Murphy's club again in 19 days at the WPI tri-match on October 2 in Worcester, MA.
Pine Manor returns to action Thursday night at 7:00 at UMass-Dartmouth.
