Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2
West Haven, CT -- Through six games this season, Pine Manor College had struggled to score runs. On Sunday, things changed for the Gators. Pine Manor defeated Albertus Magnus College in both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at West Haven High School in West Haven, CT. In the first game, the Gators outlasted the Falcons to win 15-10. Pine Manor's bats stayed hot in the second game of the day as the Gators once again pushed across 15 runs, defeating Albertus 15-1.
The Gators set the tone for the day in the first inning of game one when Senior Jess Kennedy (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet) tripled to lead off the game. After junior Tara Doehler (Lakeville,MA/Apponequet) walked to put runners on the corners, Kennedy then scored on a wild pitch to give Pine Manor its first run of the day. With Doehler now on second, junior Kayla Nielsen (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) would single to once again give the Gators runners on first and third. With two on and no one out, sophomore Kaylyn Delgado (Worcester, MA/ Bartlett) would step to the dish and deliver a single to drive in both runs. Delgado's pair of RBI's in the first inning was just the beginning of a big day that would see her drive in a total of 11 runs for Pine Manor.
With Delgado aboard, Pine Manor would continue to do damage as freshman Macayla Kirylo (Pawtucket, RI/William E. Tolman Sr.) hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot that came following a walk to classmate Ashley Carusone (Nashua,NH/Nashua North). The Gators would tack on more runs in the next four innings, scoring two in the second, three in the third and fourth before pushing one more run across in the fifth to take a 15-7 lead. Albertus would score three more runs, including two in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to rally past PMC.
"It was a great way to start the season," said junior captain Kayla Nielsen following the Pine Manor's big opening day. In the first game of the day Nielsen went three for four, scoring three runs for the Gators, before going two for four with an RBI in Game Two.
In Game Two, Delgado and Kirylo once again helped the Gators take an early lead. Delgado hit a three-run home run with one out in the first before Kirylo came to bat, just two batters later, and delivered a two-run shot to give Pine Manor a five run advantage. The Gators would score six more runs in the second as Delgado would go yard for the second time in as many innings. The Gators would then tack on four more runs to secure the 15-1 victory in the second game.
Doehler started both games in the circle for the Gators and picked up her first two wins of the season. In the first game, she struck out nine, surrenduring five hits and pitching six and two-thirds innings in a near complete game effort. In the second game, Doehler struck out seven and gave up only one run as she went the distance for the Gators.
The Gators will now take on Lesley University on Tuesday at Pine Manor Field. The game will be the home opener for Pine Manor, first pitch for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
