Gators send seniors out in style, beat Daniel Webster, 14-6
CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Pine Manor (4-8) celebrated its Senior Day with a 14-6 win over Daniel Webster (1-8) Tuesday afternoon, getting five goals from leading scorer Elaine Rodriguez and career-highs of four scores and two assists from freshman Molly Manley.
Not to be overshadowed on the day on which she would suit up in the green and white for the final time was Pine Manor goalie Angeline Capre, who held the Eagles to one goal in the final 26:00 and stopped seven of nine shots on goal in a second half dominated by her Gators. Capre (Dorchester, MA/Madison Park) totaled nine saves, a number of them from point-blank range, in her final game in Chestnut Hill.
The Gators started out sluggish, with Daniel Webster jumping out to a 3-1 lead on Shawna Kavanagh’s (Abington, MA/Abington) second goal at the 12:39 mark of the first half. After Rodriguez (Bronx, NY/Banana Kelly) raced in to score 13 seconds later, Natalie Bates (N. Kingstown, RI/N. Kingstown) scored just 10 seconds after that, again putting the Eagles up two goals, this time 4-2, where the score would stay until the closing minutes of the half.
From the closing minutes of the first onward, though, this one belonged to the Gators. After a beautiful feed from Victoria Garcia (Westfield, MA/Westfield) set up Manley for her first goal of the game, Manley (E. Greenbush, NY/Columbia) returned the favor on Rodriguez’s third goal of the half, which tied the game, 4-4,
Ten seconds later, the Gators grabbed the lead and never relinquished, with Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) scoring her first of two goals after scoring three last night against Becker. Manley got on the board for a third time, this time off a feed from Glenn Grushko (Orange County, NY/Solomon Schechter) with 32 seconds remaining, sending Pine Manor in to halftime leading 6-4.
After Bates’ second goal of the game cut the deficit to one, senior Stephanie Ludwig got in the act in her final game as a Gator, scoring one of her three second-half goals. Deegan’s second score put Pine Manor ahead 8-5 at the 25:00 mark, and Jess Blair’s club turned two Daniel Webster yellow cards that resulted in 5:12 of plus-strength play into four goals in under a 4:00 span, putting the Gators up 12-5.
In her finale as a Gator, Ludwig picked up a three-goal hat trick and fired six shots on goal. Fellow senior Essence Denton (Chicago, IL/Woodlands Academy) scooped up two ground balls to close out her career.
The Gators finish a productive season on a high note, winning three of the team’s last five games and, at 4-8, earning the program’s first victories since reacquiring NCAA Division III status three seasons ago. The Eagles return to Nashua, NH to end their season on a two-game homestand, playing Green Mountain on Friday and Thomas on Monday.
