Gators top rival Rivier in nail biter, advance to face Simmons

NEWTON, MA -- Courtney Wallace went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and freshman starter Tara Doehler earned her tenth victory, stranding runners at second and third to preserve a 5-4 win over Rivier Saturday afternoon in GNAC Tournament play at Lasell College.
Rivier, which defeated Pine Manor in last year's conference championship, had a golden opportunity to eliminate the Gators again. With runners on second and third and one out in the seventh, it was Doehler's poise that prevailed. She struck out All-American Second Teamer Monica White and induced a ground out to end it, giving the Gators a 5-4 win.
The win was truly a team effort, with all nine Pine Manor starters either collecting a hit, scoring or driving in a run. Jackie Mannino and Jackie Martinez went 2-for-4, while lead-off hitter Patty Pabon, named with Wallace to the All-GNAC First Team yesterday, went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Deusser's Gators (20-19) advance to take on a familiar foe in Simmons at 4 p.m. Pine Manor beat the Sharks yesterday, the second straight meeting between the two teams that resulted in a 1-0, extra-innings Pine Manor victory. This will be the fourth time the team square off, with the Gators owning a 3-0 series lead.
