CHESTNUT HILL, MA – After Alicia Grenier’s third career hat trick gave Pine Manor the win in Margaret Roberts’ college debut in goal, 4-3 over visiting Mitchell College Wednesday night.
Both teams’ leading scorers got found the scoring column in the early going, with the Gators doing so first at 4:35. Alicia Grenier (left, Swansea, MA/Case) knocked in her sixth of the season on a feed from Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower), but the Gators first lead in six games was short lived.
Nikki Hoxie’s (Winsted, CT/Gilbert) 11th goal of the season in the seventh minute on a nifty pass from Melissa Sullivan (Palmer, MA/Pathfinder) past two Pine Manor defenders tied the contest 1-1. Just over five minutes later, junior Paige Ehnot (West Hartford, CT/Conrad) put the Mustangs ahead on her third of the season.
Grenier responded on another feed from Deegan. Just outside the 20:00 mark, Grenier took a bouncing pass inside of 10 yards and headed it over Mustangs keeper Brittany O’Neil, tying the contest 2-2.
Lucky No. 13 gave the Gators the lead and completed her hat trick with a breakaway goal in the 60th minute, her eighth goal of 2009.
Freshman Amanda Smalley (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) added an insurance goal on a penalty kick (right) at 67:58, at which point it looked like the Gators would coast to their third win of 2009.
The Mustangs, however, had other ideas. Out of an injury time out, Mitchell put several quality shots on goal. Finally, in the 75th minute, Kaitlyn McGinn (Millstone, NJ/Allentown) launched a shot off an Angie Smith (Meridan, CT/Platt) corner kick from deep on the left wing over Roberts’ head, closing the deficit to 4-3.
It was as close as the Mustangs would come. Roberts and the Gators defense held the visitors scoreless over the final 20:00 – surviving a serious threat when the keeper swatted away a Hoxie breakaway attempt with 21 seconds left – to secure the win.
Roberts made 11 saves in her debut in net, while O’Neil corralled seven Gators attempts. Pine Manor held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 21-19 advantage in shots.
With the win, Pine Manor moves to 3-8-1, matching the team’s win total from a season ago, in which the Gators went 3-11-2. Mitchell falls to 3-8-0.
The Gators return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph (CT).
