CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Volleyball player Jennifer Gross (Coral Springs, FL) was named the 2011-2012 Pine Manor College Athlete of the Year during the 2012 Awards Ceremony, held on Wednesday May 2 in the Founders Room of the Ferry Administrative Building.
Gross helped lead the volleyball team to a 14-9 record- the most wins in a decade for the program, finishing the season with a team-leading 222 kills and 34 blocks. Her overall hitting percentage of .347 was good enough to finish 36th in the nation among NCAA Division III players. Gross was also honored as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week on October 17, 2011.
Gross’ teammate Destiny Mann (Orlando, FL) was honored with the Peter G. Ellis Award, presented annually to a first-year student-athlete for demonstrating dedication, spirit and ability. Mann averaged two kills per set for volleyball during the season, finishing as the only underclassmen on the team with over 100 kills -- collecting a total of 167. Mann also finished the season with 168 digs and 40 service aces and was named GNAC Rookie of the Week on September 26, 2011.
Senior Kayla Provost (Saco, ME) was given the Henry K. White Award for career achievement at Pine Manor. A standout member of the softball program since her freshmen season in 2009, Provost finished her career with .317 batting average helping her to collect 119 career hits and 79 RBIs. The 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Sportswoman of the Year, she was also named a GNAC All-Conference selection in 2009 and 2010.
Other winners included: junior Margaret Roberts (Allentown, PA) who was presented with the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. While, sophomore softball player Macayla Kirylo (Pawtucket, RI) was presented with the Gator Athletic Award for her participation and dedication to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Senior soccer Christina Santos (Pawtucket, RI) was presented with the PMC Pride Award for her dedication to the soccer program.
Freshmen Samantha Jones (Springfield, MA) was presented with the Sportsmanship Award. Sophomore Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL) who was given the inaugural Coaches’ Award, and Sophomore soccer player Amanda Powell (Lumberton, NJ) who was given the Service Award for her participation in Athletics as a Work Study student.
Finally, Pine Manor Director of Residence Life & Community Engagement Lisa Rodrigues was given the Henry Baker Appreciation Award after supporting the Athletic Department multiple initiatives throughout the 2011-12 school year, including participation in Cradles 2 Crayons and Play 4 Kay fundraising as well as for being a consistent support of teams throughout the season.
