Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat kind of support will I get as a PMC student?Our international students receive support in many ways. PMC's international admissions counselor helps students through the admissions process answering questions about admissions requirements, academics, student life, scholarships and more. PMC's international student advisor assists international students with immigration, personal, and academic issues. The International Student Club (ISC) is instrumental in helping students feel connected and share their cultures within the PMC community. The Learning Resource Center (LRC) provides professional tutoring at no extra cost to assist students with writing, study skills, and subject matter. Through PMC's Portfolio Learning Seminar Program, students learn to be reflective, self-directed learners. In this unique learning opportunity, students connect with their group led by a faculty advisor, Student Life staff member and upper-class peer advisor. Moreover, PMC is dedicated to providing an approachable learning environment for students through classroom discussions, campus activities and community involvement. What resources are available if I need help improving my English?For students who are not yet confidence in their English ability, PMC's English Language Institute (ELI) offers a variety of courses to improve your English language skills, regardless of your level. The English Language Institute is an integral part of Pine Manor College, not an outside organization or part of a "chain" of language schools. In addition to the ELI, the College offers strong ESL programs. What is the SAT I / ACT requirement?If your native language is English, the SAT I or ACT is recommended. What will my personal expenses be for one year at PMC?The total resident costs for the 2008-2009 year for international students is $30,472. This includes $18,957 for tuition, $11,115 for double room and meals, $753 for health insurance, $400 for fees and deposits. Also include funds to pay for books and personal expenses. For commuters, the cost of housing, meals, and transportation can easily be in the $10,000 - 12,000 range. What health insurance do I need?Students must have health insurance. PMC health insurance can be waived if a student provides her own insurance that is comparable to Massachusetts regulations. The insurance company must have an office in the United States. Where is PMC located and how do I get around Boston?PMC is located 5 miles from downtown Boston. Students take a PMC shuttle (or take a 15-minute walk) to the Green Line station of the “T,” the Boston subway, to bring them into town. Twenty minutes later, they will be in the heart of Boston. The subway is generally the cheapest, quickest and easiest way to navigate Boston. What is Boston like?Ask many people and you will get many answers...but all will say, Boston has it. Boston is a cultural and intellectual classroom with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and theatre district to name a few. A rich history includes treasures such as the Old North Church, U.S.S. Constitution and Bunker Hill monument. Boston sports fans cheer on the Red Sox Champions, the famous Patriots team, the Boston marathon runners and more. One can stroll through Harvard Square or watch sailboats in the Charles River. People love shopping at busy Downtown Crossing, fashionable Newbury Street, and touristy Quincy Market. All enjoy a world of casual to fine cuisine in Boston's distinctive neighborhoods. Students venture out to see bands, watch performances, or dance the night away on Lansdowne Street. Boston is a center of business, technology, communication and healthcare offering dynamic and diverse internship opportunities. What does PMC's campus look like and where is it located?PMC's beautiful campus is spread over 60 acres of rolling hills and wooded grounds nestled within a quiet affluent neighborhood in Chestnut Hill. New England enjoys the four seasons of ever-changing scenery, temperature, and activities. PMC is minutes from the heart of Boston, 2 hours from New Hampshire and Vermont mountains, and 3 1/2 hours from exciting New York City. What is on-campus housing like?First-year students and their roommates live in large double rooms sharing a residence hall with 30 other women. Living on-campus creates a sense of community and residence life staff helps organize social events, group outings, workshops, films, and discussions about contemporary issues. Students can request available single rooms after their first year. There are five residence halls in each village and three villages in total. How can I learn about course offerings?PMC offers over 50 areas of study such as Business, Psychology, Communications and Nursing. Explore PMC's web site for course listings. Plus, you may contact our Admissions office and we will send you a course catalog. How can I get a visa to study at PMC?After a student is accepted to PMC, the student must show they can pay for a year's expenses. After sending in their tuition deposit, an I-20 form along with important information about F-1 visa status, application and maintenance will be sent to the student from PMC's international student advisor. The student may then apply for a student visa at a U.S. Embassy in their home country. Can I bring a dependent along with me as I study at PMC?Yes. You will need to provide additional evidence of being able to financially support your dependent. Your child will be issued a dependent I-20 from PMC and will be able to apply for a visa as well. Keep in mind that you will need to provide health insurance for your child.
