CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor College women’s basketball sophomore Natasia Franklin (Windsor, CT) led all scorers with 28 points, while also collecting a game-high 17 rebounds, but visiting Johnson & Wales University snapped the Gators four-game win streak with an 80-65 victory over PMC on Wednesday evening at Brunelli Court. Pine Manor falls to 7-9 with the setback.
PMC freshman Meagan Badohu (Boston, MA) also recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points on 4-8 shooting while collecting 10 rebounds. While, classmate Alexis Lee (Akron, OH) also added 10 points for the Gators.
Johnson & Wales finished with three scorers in double-figures, as sophomore Nicole DiCocco (Media, PA) led the Wildcats with a team-high 20 points off the bench. Senior Marina Millian (Chester, NY) recorded a double-double, scoring 18 points and collecting 13 rebounds to help JWU improve to 8-11 on the season. Junior guard Jenna Juron (Burnt Hills, NY) added 14 points of her own, scoring 10 in the first half.
Johnson & Wales took their first lead at 15:23 of the first and never relinquished it for the remainder of the contest. Both teams started off the night cold from the floor, as Pine Manor took a 4-2 lead at 16:15 of the first, following a layup by Khiyana Isaac (Boston, MA). A pair of free-throws from Millian tied the score for JWU, before Juron added a layup to give the visitors the early 6-4 advantage.
The Gators shot only 25.7% from the field in the first, struggling to find their range but staying within reach of JWU until the Wildcats broke open a double-digit lead, at 28-18, with 4:42 to play in the first. The Wildcat lead would grow to as many as 16 in the closing minute of the first, as a layup from senior Chrissy Toth (Queens, NY) helped JWU take a 38-22 advantage into the break.
Pine Manor responded in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 43-42, as Franklin poured in 26 of her 28 points after the break. However, the first-half hole proved to be too large for PMC to climb out of, as the Gators would get no closer than within 12 points of the Wildcats for the remainder of the contest.
Pine Manor will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Randolph, VT to take on Vermont Tech. The Gators and Knights met earlier this season, with Pine Manor coming away with a 72-57 home victory. Johnson & Wales will also be in action this Saturday, as they will return home to host conference foe Simmons College at 1:00 PM.
