Professional Experience

  • Assistant Professor and Co-Chair of the Communication Department, Pine Manor College, Chestnut Hill, MA, 2004-present
    • Teach classes in the Communication and English departments including Media Writing, Advanced Journalism and First Year Seminar class called “Behind the Scenes: Careers in Communications.”
    • Advise more than 40 students and serve as faculty advisor for Senior Projects and Senior Internship in Communication department. Projects include documentaries, movies and public relations campaigns.
    • Serve on the Curriculum Committee and Academic Standards Committee. Co-chaired the Executive Committee for two years and served on the Recruitment and Retention Committee and the Academic Review Board.
    • Received the Ruth Allinger Gibson Teaching Award for the 2006-2007 academic year.
  • Communications Consultant, Boston, MA, 2003-present
    • Write and edit newsletter and brochure copy for healthcare and nonprofit organizations. Wrote articles for several newsletters at Harvard Vanguard and for HCPro, a healthcare publishing company.
    • Edited MSPCA-Angell’s 12-page quarterly newsletter Companion, which is distributed to 100,000 clients and employees. Managed staff of five. Wrote and edited copy. Chose photographs. Organized editorial calendar. Helped with media relations as needed.   
    • Developed organization’s new Web site, which provides information on the MSPCA-Angell’s seven animal care and adoption centers and three veterinary hospitals. Oversaw content management system. Managed writers and wrote and edited copy. Helped with site redesign and structural changes. 
  • Writing Tutor, Boston, MA, 2007-2008
    • Tutor students in elementary and junior and senior high school in writing, vocabulary and grammar. Also work on MCAS and SAT preparation. 
  • Managing Editor, Boston Metro, Boston, MA, 2001-2003
    • Managed editorial staff of 10 as well as several freelancers for Boston Metro, a daily newspaper with a circulation of more than 450,000.
    • Worked with Editor-in-Chief to shape the overall focus of the paper ranging from making daily news decisions to making changes in design and presentation. Edited copy. Managed freelance budget. Acted as liaison between editorial department and outside communications firms.
  • Executive Producer/Producer, WCVB-TV, (Boston ABC affiliate) Needham, MA, 1998-2001
    • Managed Channel 5’s award-winning "Eyeopener" morning newscast and its producers. Advised producers on what stories to run in the newscasts. Made decisions about breaking news and how it should be covered.
    • Produced the noon news. Chose video, helped design graphics and wrote and edited stories. Worked on story development with anchors and field reporters. Started as 6 a.m. Producer and was promoted to Executive Producer.
  • Producer, WTNH, (Hartford ABC affiliate) New Haven, CT, 1996-1998
    • Produced second half-hour of award-winning 5-6 p.m. newscast. Wrote most stories.
    • Decided question of the day for "8 Interactive" segment. Segment allowed viewers to participate in the news through man-on-the-street interviews, phone calls and e-mail. Produced special on the dangers of E. coli.
    • Produced the morning newscast and was then promoted to the 5 p.m.
  • Producer, WWLP/TV22, (Springfield NBC affiliate) Springfield, MA, (1996)
    • Produced morning newscast. Wrote stories and booked guests for show.
  • Education Reporter/Reporter, Community Newspaper Co., Needham, MA, (1991-1995)
    • Covered education beat for the Newton and Brookline TAB newspapers. Worked as a reporter in other communities including Cambridge, Somerville, Framingham and Natick.
    • Attended local board meetings and wrote six to ten hard news and feature stories per week. Received several awards for my work.

Service to Pine Manor College

  • Faculty advisor to more than 40 students.
  • Teach First Year Seminar called “Behind the Scenes: Careers in Communication.” Helped create the seminar program and have taught the course for three years. Participate in weekly meetings with FYS team.
  • Lead presentation on the First Year Experience Seminar at a scholarship of teaching and learning conference in spring 2006. The conference was jointly sponsored by the New England Faculty Development Consortium and the Middlesex Carnegie Summer Institute. The talk was called “Creating a Seamless Learning Community: An Inclusive Approach to Fostering a Successful First Year Experience.”
  • Serve on the Curriculum Committee and Academic Standards Committee. Co-chaired the Executive Committee and served on the Recruitment and Retention Committee and the Academic Review Board.
  • Developed Visual Communication concentration in collaboration with Visual Arts Department. Concentration will make students more marketable in the job market and strengthen their skills in both Communication and Visual Arts.
  • Chosen by Communication department to do program’s self-study in spring 2008.
  • Spoke at the Honors Ceremony in spring 2007.
  • Awarded Center Associate position for 2006-2007 academic year. Award given by the Center for Inclusive Leadership and Social Responsibility to those working on service learning projects in the classroom.
  • Received the Ruth Allinger Gibson Teaching Award.

Awards

  • Received the Ruth Allinger Gibson Teaching Award at Pine Manor College.
  • Received three New England Press Association awards for reporting in education, general news and on social and racial issues. Nominated for NEPA's "Rookie of the Year" award.
  • Awarded Teaching Assistantship/Scholarship and Summer Fellowship at Syracuse University based on academic performance.
  • Produced/directed documentary that was selected for Chicago film festival, which featured works by director Ang Lee.
