Lasers shoot down Gators attempt at first GNAC win

CHESTNUT HILL, MA – A pair of Lasell goals in the opening 16 minutes dashed the Gators hopes of a first Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory, as the Lasers upended the Gators, 4-1, Thursday afternoon at Hedley Field.

Allyson Bushy (Westminster, MA/Oakmont) got Lasell (6-4-2, 5-2-2 GNAC) on the board in the 12th minute, beating Pine Manor goalkeeper Margaret Roberts (Allentown, PA/Louis E. Dieruff) on a breakaway attempt to the lower right corner of the net for the junior’s first goal of the season.

Just four minutes later, at 15:47, fellow junior Kaitlyn Fields (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham) earned her first score of the season. After being taken down in the box by Roberts, the captain beat the keeper on a pentaly kick, extending the Lasers lead and providing all the offense Vito LaFrancesca’s team would need.

The visitors took a 3-0 lead on Jessica Taylor’s third goal of the season. The sophomore forward intercepted a Pine Manor (3-11-1, 0-11-0 GNAC) pass and beat Roberts to the bottom left corner, putting Lasell comfortably in the lead in the 29th minute.

The Gators got on the board with just under two minutes remaining in the half, cutting the deficit to 3-1 on Jess Kennedy’s first goal as a Gator. The junior (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet) took a beautiful downfield pass from sophomore Kasey Jeronimo (Swansea, MA/Case), fired one shot off the left post and followed her rebound to beat keeper Ashley Parrelli to the bottom left corner.

Lasell added an insurance goal on a Meghan Moore (Conway, NH/Kennett) header from point blank range in the middle of the goalkeeper box thanks to a nifty Margaret Carvalho (Swansea, MA/Case) cross from the right corner. Moore’s goal was also her first of the year.

The Lasers outshot Pine Manor 28-6 and garnered 10 more corner kicks than the Gators.

Roberts made seven saves for the Gators. Pine Manor honors its lone senior, Michelle Myers, prior to the team’s home finale on Saturday as the Gators take on Daniel Webster in non-conference action at noon at Hedley Field.
