Chestnut Hill, MA—Lesley University broke open a one run game with a seven run fifth inning and defeated Pine Manor, 12-4 on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Pine Manor Field in Chestnut Hill, MA.
Lesley got out to an early lead in the first inning as Ashley Cunningham (Mountain Top, PA/ Crestwood) singled up the middle to drive in the second run of the inning and give the Lynx the 2-0 advantage. In the second, Lesley would tack on another run as Emily Mangiaratti (Amherst, MA/Amherset Reg.) would single to drive home the third run of the game.
The Gators wouldn’t respond until the bottom of the third when junior Kayla Nielsen (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) would hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to bring the Gators within two.
Lesley would respond with two more runs in the top of the fourth to again distance itself from PMC. However, in the bottom of the inning Macayla Kirylo (Pawtucket, RI/William E. Tolman Sr.) would single to score classmate Ashley Carusone (Nashua, NH/Nashua North). Senior Michelle Campbell (Baltimore,MD/Seton Keough) would then single to score Kirylo and bring the Gators back to within one.
In the fifth, Lesley would put the game out of reach as it scored seven runs on six hits to take a commanding 12-4 lead. The Gators would go quietly in the bottom of the inning, despite getting the first two runners aboard.
With the loss, Pine Manor drops to 2-7, while Lesley moves to .500 at 4-4 early in the 2011 season. Pine Manor will now move on to a battle with GNAC opponent Norwich on Friday April 1, 2011.
Note: Game two of today’s doubleheader was called due to darkness in the fourth inning.
