Lynch, Powell Help Soccer Open 2013 on the Right Foot

Box Score

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sophomore Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, NJ) scored two goals, and assisted on Amanda Powell’s (Lumberton, NJ) game-winning goal with just over 20 minutes to play, to lead Pine Manor to a 3-1 opening day victory over the visiting Daniel Webster College Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Hedley Field.

An outstanding individual effort from Lynch opened the scoring 17 minutes into the game. The Gators’ leading scorer from a season ago, Lynch managed to weave her way across the penalty area around both the Daniel Webster defense and goalkeeper Kerry Hager (Wolcott, CT) before striking the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

The Gators, however, had little time to celebrate as it took just 38 seconds for Daniel Webster to respond. With the Eagles gaining position off the kick-off,  a ball down the right wing helped Abigail Goslin (Wrentham, MA) to get a step on the PMC defense, and make her way in on PMC goalkeeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL). Goslin then powered a low hard shot that Kopystysnky was able to fight off, but the rebound came right back to Goslin who then calmly knocked the ball up and in to the top of the net.

Goslin’s goal would deadlock the teams until late in the second half when Lynch was again able to break free from the Eagles’ backline and find Powell for the go-ahead tally in the 69th minute. Lynch got a step on the defense and moved into the right side of the penalty area before delivering a ball back to the top of the penalty area for Powell. PMC’s senior midfielder took a touch before finding the back of the net to the right of Hager.

Less than five minutes later, Lynch would put the game out of reach as she dribbled through three Daniel Webster defenders before cutting a shot back to her right to beat Hager and secure the 3-1 victory for the Gators.

For the Eagles, Hager made a total of 10 saves in the game, including five on Lynch. For the Gators, Lynch finished with seven shots on goal while Kopystynsky made five saves in net to record her first victory of the season.

Pine Manor will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Fisher College at 4:00 PM at Hedley Field. Daniel Webster will return to action next weekend when they play host to Anna Maria College at 1:00 PM.
