CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor College junior Phalogne Pierre (Boston, MA), above, recorded a career-high 20 kills but was still unable to lead the Gators past visiting Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers held on to take a thrilling 3-2 (25-22, 14-25, 25-22, 24-26 and 17-15) victory over the Gators. With the win the Buccaneers improve to 3-17 on the season. The Gators fall to 1-15 with the setback.
Despite three straight Pine Manor points to open the match, Massachusetts Maritime was able to get out to a 9-4 lead in the first set. The Buccaneers would eventually stretch the advantage to 17-10 before capturing the first set victory, 25-22.
Sophomore Emily Calnan (Hingham, MA) helped lead the charge for the Bucs early and often as she finished with a team-high 13 kills on the night while also recording three aces, three total blocks and three digs in the match. Junior Meghan Weir (North Andover, MA) finished with eight kills of her own to go along with 15 assists and 11 digs. Senior Michaela Garrity (Tiverton, RI) and freshman Meaghan Brain (Hanson, MA) each added seven kills for Massachusetts Maritime while freshman libero Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, MA) recorded a staggering 32 digs in the match to lead the Buccaneers defense.
In the second set, the Gators rallied to take the most commanding set victory of the night at 25-14. Fueled by Pierre and junior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, CT) the Gators cruised to a 25-14 victory. Franklin finished with 12 kills on the evening, trailing only Pierre and Calan for match-high honors. The third set played out much like the first, as the Bucs got out to an early advantage and were able to withstand a late PMC rally to take a 25-22 victory.
In the fourth set, Massachusetts Maritime held a late 19-17 lead, but following a timeout Pine Manor was once again the Gators were able to rally thanks to an emphatic kill and a pair of aces from Franklin that helped the Gators turn the tables and eventually take a 21-20 advantage. The teams then exchanged points before reaching a 24-all deadlock. After pulling ahead 25-24, a kill from Pierre would send the match into the fifth and final set.
Massachusetts Maritime once again got out to an early lead in the fifth set, taking an 8-5 advantage when the teams switched sides. However, the Gators rallied once more to tie the score at 10-10. Massachusetts Maritime then scored the next three points in-a row to take a 13-10 led before Pine Manor closed the gap to 13-12. The teams exchanged points to push the match to 15-all but a pair of Pine Manor errors would eventually help the Bucs take the 17-15 set victory and the 3-2 match victory.
For Pine Manor, freshman Alexis Bushika (Adams, MA) finished with a match-high 26 assists while junior Destiny Mann (Orlando, FL) finished with a team-high 18 digs.
The Bucs return to action this Saturday when they travel to Salve Regina for a 1:00 PM match. Pine Manor will also return to the court on Saturday when they travel to take on Becker and host Wentworth in a tri-match beginning at 11:00 AM in Boston, MA.
