CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Junior Lauren Salem (Westfield, MA) scored the eventually game-winning goal at 11:28 of the first half to lead the visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy to a 3-0 victory over Pine Manor College on Wednesday afternoon at a soggy Hedley field in Chestnut Hill, MA.
Salem opened the scoring when she broke loose through Pine Manor midfield and drove a shot from the top of the penalty area past Pine Manor goalkeeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL) to give the Buccaneers the 1-0 advantage. The Buccaneers would head into the half still leading 1-0 despite outshooting the Gators by a 15-4 margin in the opening session.
In the second half, Mass. Maritime finally found a way to beat Kopystynsky again when Emily Behen (Danvers, MA) scored her fourth goal of the season, slotting a low shot under Kopystysnky and inside the left post. Behen would add one more, on an assist from Salem, in the final seconds of the half to give the Buccaneers the 3-0 victory.
Kopystynsky finished the match with 16 saves for the Gators as Mass. Maritime held a commanding 40-7 advantage in shots. With the win, Mass. Maritime moves to 2-8-0 on the season while Pine Manor drops to 1-8-0 overall.
Pine Manor will now look to Saturday, as the Gators will travel to Lawrence, MA to take on Fisher College. The Gators will be looking to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to Fisher earlier this season. Mass. Maritime will return to the pitch on Friday evening when they host Bridgewater State at 6:00 p.m. in Buzzards Bay, MA.
