St. Joseph's defeats Pine Manor, 7-3, eliminates Gators
NEWTON, MA -- Pine Manor’s season came to an end on Sunday with a 7-3 loss to St. Joseph’s of Maine in the loser’s bracket championship of the GNAC Tournament, as the Gators mustered only six hits of Monks starter Christy Wezowicz.
St. Joseph’s took a 2-0 lead in the second and got two more two innings later to go up 4-0 in the fourth. The big blow came in the sixth, when designated hitter Ashley Geel’s two-run double put the Monks in front 7-1.
The Gators answered with two in the sixth, with Jackie Martinez singling in Courtney Wallace. Kayla Nielsen scored on Jackie Mannino’s ground out, but Pine Manor couldn’t get within striking distance against Wezowicz, who held the Gators to five singles and a triple.
Gators starter Tara Doehler wasn’t as fortunate, allowing seven earned on 15 hits over her seven innings of work. Nielsen went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Michelle Myers went 1-for-3 with a triple.
The loss marks the end of the road for Pine Manor, which wraps up 2009 with a 21-20 record after going 3-2 in the GNAC Tournament. Wallace and shortstop Patty Pabon were named to the All-GNAC First Team, while Kayla Ferrara garnered second team honors. Mannino and Nielsen, meanwhile, were named to the third team.
