CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Waltham native Mike Murphy has been named Pine Manor head women’s volleyball coach, director of athletics Erin J. Brennen announced Thursday.

“We are excited to add Mike to our team,” said Brennen. “We are thrilled to add somebody of Mike’s expertise.”

Murphy guided the girls’ varsity team at his alma mater of Waltham High School to a 46-37 record over four consecutive seasons with improved records from 2004-2007, including a 41-17 (.707) record in league play. In 2006 and 2007, he led the Hawks to back-to-back state tournament appearances.

Prior to Waltham High, Murphy constructed a winner from scratch at Mass Bay Community College as the first-ever head coach of the men’s and women’s teams from 2001-2002. Murphy quickly built winning programs at Mass Bay, taking both the men’s and women’s teams to the postseason in their inaugural season in 2001.

In 1998, he returned to Waltham High for the first time as an assistant coach on the boys team, on which he starred from 1986-1988.

Pine Manor returns five starters from a team that went 1-22 a season ago. The Gators graduated only one senior and return eight upperclassmen in 2010.
