Newton, Mass. -- Despite a game-high 18 points from junior Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA/ Cambridge Rindge), Pine Manor dropped a 65-51 decision to Mount Ida College on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Mount Ida Athletic Center in Newton, MA. Three players scored in double-figures for Mount Ida, who improves to 8-15 overall and 4-6 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. The win also helps the Mustangs to move one game ahead of Pine Manor in the race for the final spot in the GNAC Playoffs, as Pine Manor drops to 6-14 overall and 3-7 in the GNAC.
Pine Manor established a 47-40 edge on the glass, with Dumeran notching a double-double, as she also had a game-high 15 rebounds. Junior Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) grabbed 11 rebounds for the Gators while also contributing 6 points. Junior Phibe Pham (Boston, MA/Snowden) and sophomore Tia Nelson (Rockport, MA/Rockport) each had 7 points for Pine Manor.
Mount Ida was led by freshman forward Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield), who had a team-high 17 points, while junior Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central), who recorded a double-double, totaling 12 points and 12 rebounds and dishing out five assists for the Mustangs. Mount Ida junior Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Bryant University) made strong contributions on both ends of the floor, scoring 15 points, dishing out five assists, and recording six steals.
While the Gators only trailed by eight at the half, they only held the lead once throughout the entire contest, 5-4 at the 15:34 mark of the first-half. Despite falling behind early, the Gators would hang with the Mustangs throughout the first session, trailing by only three points, 25-22, following a lay-up by Jessica Gilmore (Dorchester, MA/Dorchester) with three minutes remaining in the first.
With Mount Ida leading 30-22 at the beginning of the second half, the Mustangs would go on an 11-2 run to distance themselves from the Gators at 41-23 with 14:55 remaining in the second. Pine Manor would get no closer than within nine points with just over four minutes remaining in the second-half, as Mount Ida would hang on for the 65-51 victory.
Pine Manor now looks to Thursday and a 6:00 p.m. contest against St. Joseph's College of Maine in a GNAC game rescheduled from earlier this month.
