Laurie Kaplowitz explores the psychologically complex and compelling world of human sensuality in her current exhibit of paintings at the Hess Gallery at Pine Manor College. In Realm of the Senses, Kaplowitz focuses on figures, couples, and love, giving contemporary audiences insight into age-old issues. She celebrates sensuality in her depictions of the human image, and reinforces this celebration with the beautiful, tactile quality of her paint. Her canvases, reminiscent of frescoes and classical painting, are rich in symbolism and mystery.
Kaplowitz uses many layers of subtle color in her paintings. Might these layers symbolize the many layers of the human psyche? She explains, "Painting a form once is not enough. It has to be painted and repainted, again and again, each time sinking it back into space, so that upon viewing, the image floats to the surface and resonates in its fullest and richest form." Her works encourage repeated viewings and searches through the stratum. For us, seeing the painting once is not enough!
Laurie Kaplowitz is a Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She is represented by the Stephen Haller Gallery in New York, the Edith Baker Gallery in Dallas, and Fresh Paint in Los Angeles. She lives in Boston, MA.
Exhibition researched and mounted by the Art Exhibition Seminar. For more information, see Course List and Descriptions in History and Culture.
