Beginning October 18, the elegant abstractions of Japanese artist Eiko Shima will be on view in the Hess Gallery at Pine Manor College. In work that combines bold shapes with subtle shifts in color and texture, the artist uses the formal language of art to transcend cultural boundaries, and create images that speak universally of the ways in which the natural world engages our hearts, minds, and souls. Created with traditional Japanese pigments, nikawa glue, sumi ink, and floss silk in a variety of applications on Japanese paper, these mixed-media works invoke the sensibility of traditional Japanese painting while involving the viewer in the interplay between the two-dimensional picture surface and a deeper, three-dimensional space. In these pieces, Ms. Shima gives homage to nature, and the serenity and tranquility she finds there.
A visiting artist at Pine Manor College, Eiko Shima has exhibited widely in Japan and East Asia, and is the recipient of numerous awards. She will be conducting seminars at Pine Manor College on the following topics: Japanese yuzen kimono, Japanese exhibition aesthetics, and Ukiyo-e paintings by Ando Hiroshige. She will also be conducting workshops in sumi-e and calligraphy, and Japanese flower arrangement. All seminars and workshops are open to the public. Details may be found on the Pine Manor College website www.pmc.edu or by calling (617) 731-7157.
